The Meat Institute supports the businesses processing meat and their supplier partners that sustainably nourish families

About us

The Meat Institute is a national trade association that represents companies that process 95 percent of red meat and 70 percent of turkey in the US and their suppliers throughout America. Headquartered in metropolitan Washington, DC, the Meat Institute keeps its fingers on the pulse of legislation, regulation and media activity that impacts the meat and poultry industry and provides rapid updates and analyses to its members to help them stay informed. In addition, the Meat Institute conducts scientific research through its Foundation designed to help meat and poultry companies improve their plants and their products. The Institute's many meetings and educational seminars also provide excellent networking and information-sharing opportunities for members of the industry. The Meat Institute is governed by elected leaders and staffed by 25 professionals. The Meat Institute's elected leaders include three officers plus the President and CEO, as well as a 107-person Board of Directors and a 40-person Executive Board. Representatives on both of these bodies include leaders in both the supplier and packer/processor segments of the industry. The Meat Institute has also created operating groups, called policy committees and advisory committees, within its membership to allow member companies to recommend Meat Institute policies in their primary areas of interest. Policy committees focus on broad functional and operational areas and develop policy recommendations for specific issues within these areas. Advisory committees provide specialized advice to policy committees.

In response to the Harris campaign's proposal for a federal price gouging ban, the Meat Institute clarifies that inflation is impacting prices across all sectors, not just at the grocery store. The rhetoric unfairly targets the meat and poultry industry, ignoring key factors like Avian Influenza, a shortage of beef cattle, and high input costs, all of which influence meat prices. While consumers see high prices, livestock producers are experiencing record highs for cattle prices due to the lowest cattle inventory since President Harry Truman. Recognition is in order for our member National Beef Packing Company LLC. Their Case Ready division achieved ZERO recordable injuries in Q1 2024—a remarkable milestone in our industry. This accomplishment is a big step toward The Protein PACT's goal of reducing workplace injuries by 50% by 2030. National Beef's focus on safety sets a powerful example. Congratulations!

The National Beef Case Ready division has accomplished something impressive. At the end of the first quarter of 2024, it had not logged a single recordable injury at any of its five facilities.  “As far as I’m aware, that’s never happened before in the meatpacking industry,” said Frank Boyer, Case Ready Safety Director. “It’s unheard of to log zero recordables for that many man hours.”  We celebrate that with many safety-focused programs put into practice over the past few years, the result has been thousands of safer and more productive work hours for everyone.

The food industry faces growing challenges that can compromise safety and shelf life. Small changes in meat formulations or storage conditions can lead to spoilage and revenue loss, with retail waste for fresh meat and seafood hitting $6.31B in 2022. From processing factors to formulation changes, growing pressures from outside demands are additional challenges to overcome when formulating for shelf-life and safety expectations. Meat scientists and product developers may have to reevaluate their standard antimicrobial system and find new solutions to combat these various threats. Power of Meat Fun Fact #7: There’s a growing consumer interest in making more conscious choices regarding meat and poultry. While most enjoy these products and see them as diet staples, Anne-Marie Roerink says about 30% are actively seeking options that better address animal welfare and environmental impact. A notable 20% of consumers are unaware of the animal welfare practices behind the meat they purchase. This gap underscores a significant educational opportunity. There's a clear demand for information on packaging, websites, and in-store displays about sustainable practices and humane treatment. This is a call to action for packers, processors, and retailers to join forces and enhance transparency around sustainability initiatives. And don't forget, registration for the 2025 Annual Meat Conference opens in October. Stay tuned for more updates! #ThePowerOfMeat2024 #Sustainability #AnimalWelfare #MeatIndustry FMI- The Food Industry Association
