Visitors from across the city got “curiouser and curiouser” as DeSimone’s imaginative team of volunteers constructed their “Alice in Canderland” structure for Canstruction New York, Inc. 2024 at Brookfield Place in Lower Manhattan yesterday (Thursday). CEO Stephen DeSimone dropped by to support the team, led by Project Engineer Spencer E. Levenson and Senior Project Engineer Katherine Anne Rivera, who dressed up as Alice and the Mad Hatter to complete a live build of the whimsical sculpture made entirely from food cans. The exciting event gave the DeSimone team a great opportunity to engage with the public, including scores of children eager to find out more about our design, the creativity of structural engineering, and of course, volunteering for a very important cause. DeSimone has been participating in Canstruction New York, Inc. for over 20 years, supporting CityHarvest International and the food insecure in NYC while engaging in the type of teamwork and creative thinking that make us an exceptional engineering firm! We want to thank our DeSimone and Royal Bank of Canada volunteers, who proved essential to the effort and helped us build our complex sculpture in just under eight hours. Today DeSimone Consulting Engineering seeks to defend the title for Best Original Design as our team completes a LIVE, public build at the 2024 Canstruction New York, Inc. competition at Brookfield Place in lower Manhattan. Drop by between 10 am and 6 pm (Oct. 31) to support the team—and see our creation come to life at this special event to benefit CityHarvest International! Led this year by Project Engineer Spencer E. Levenson and Senior Project Engineer Katherine Anne Rivera, the DeSimone volunteer team has spent months carefully planning, designing, and full-scale modeling their sculpture—an imaginative, 6-foot-tall, “Alice in Canderland” entry—which will take some eight hours to construct. The annual competition challenges some of the NYC’s best talents in the design and building industry to create spectacular, whimsical sculptures made from canned food. The cans will later be donated to City Harvest for distribution to local food banks and hunger relief organizations that help those living with food insecurity. Key members of DeSimone’s structural engineering and façade teams were on hand last night at the Concrete Industry Board Of NYC's 63rd Annual Richard H. Corbetta Awards dinner, where Associate Principal Rodolfo Medina accepted the prestigious 2024 Mid-Rise Award of Merit with Special Recognition for OLYMPIA DUMBO on behalf of the project team. Built with a striking, sail-shaped silhouette that bends skyward above the Brooklyn waterfront, the architect’s vision for Olympia DUMBO was brought to life through the collaborative, in-house expertise of DeSimone’s structural engineers and façade and building envelope specialists. At the dinner enjoying the accolades and recognition earned through hard work and innovative thinking were Asim Khan, Senior Project Manager, Benjamin Reich, Senior Associate, Mark Plechaty, Managing Principal, Rok Lee, Principal, Alexandra Teniuch, PE, Senior Project Engineer, and Borys Hayda, Managing Principal, along with Viraj Hankare, Senior Associate from Hill West Architects (not shown, Kashif Saleem, project architect).
