It’s going to get loud at the Barclays Center tonight. For the second year in a row, the New York Liberty will compete in the WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association) Championship final, this time against the Minnesota Lynx. Thornton Tomasetti provided structural design, façade design and construction engineering services to Ellerbe Becket (AECOM) and SHoP Architects for the Brooklyn design-build arena (https://lnkd.in/eDjC85gQ) that the New York Liberty calls home. After a nail-biting defeat last year to the Las Vegas Aces, whom the Liberty bested in the semifinals, the team is back on the court to defend their house and take another shot at the title. Tip-off is at 8 p.m. Eastern. Good luck to all the players, and if you’re lucky enough to be watching in person, GET LIBERTY LOUD! #SEAFOAMSZN #LIGHTITUPNYL

When it comes to sustainability in building design, some projects go above and beyond. Our latest podcast (https://lnkd.in/egg9ntJS) looks at what it takes to achieve ambitious goals for embodied carbon reduction.    Drawing on her expertise in life cycle assessments and embodied carbon reduction in buildings, Senior Project Consultant Meghan Kalisz of our Sustainability and Resilience team discusses best practices for meeting high embodied carbon targets. Meghan gives an overview of rigorous certification programs, such as Living Building Challenge CORE certification, their impact on a building’s structural system, enclosure and material selection, and what matters most when reducing embodied carbon in a building design project.    You can find our “Here’s How: Embodied Carbon” podcast, hosted by Corporate Responsibility Officer Amy Hattan, on Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, iHeartRadio, Podbean, and Spotify.      #sustainability #embodiedcarbon #HeresHowClimateAction #HeresHowPodcast

Good things often do come in pairs. Last week, Inova Health broke ground on two new state-of-the-art hospital facilities in Northern Virginia—Inova Alexandria Hospital at Landmark and Inova Franconia-Springfield Campus. Thornton Tomasetti is providing structural, acoustic and vibration engineering services for architects Ballinger and Ennead Architects, who are designing both projects. The new Alexandria location will total 1.3 million square feet and feature a 192-bed inpatient tower, cancer center, health center with expanded services such as comprehensive women’s health and underground parking as well as a six-story parking structure on the campus. The 807,000-square-foot Inova Franconia-Springfield Campus will include a 110-bed in-patient facility, emergency room, procedural rooms and diagnostic imaging and an attached outpatient services building. The hospital will be linked to the existing HealthPlex facility. Both hospitals are scheduled to open in 2028.

Whether it's structural, façade, or construction engineering, acoustic consulting, or security and protective design, 10 Thornton Tomasetti projects received awards at last week’s Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) International Conference in London and Paris.   Presented across 22 categories, the CTBUH Awards of Excellence recognize innovation in tall buildings and the urban environment. Congratulations to all our project partners! And special congratulations to Dennis Poon, vice chairman emeritus, who was inducted into the CTBUH College of Fellows for his contributions to tall building design. #CTBUH2024

It was one and done this past weekend as an 80-foot-diameter skylight, the crowning architectural feature of the new Terminal 6 at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport was installed in a single crane lift. The steel and tension cable frame of The Oculus was transported from the fabrication shop in four separate pieces that were assembled on site and put into place as one unit. The skylight’s opening will be closed off with pneumatic ETFE cushions. Working with Corgan architects, Thornton Tomasetti provided façade engineering services and specialty tensile structure design to JFK Millennium Partners and AECOM Hunt for the skylight. We are also providing specialty fabric façade design services for 100,000 square feet of ETFE canopies and skylights throughout the 1.2-million-square-foot terminal, which topped out earlier this week. The first of the terminal’s 10 gates are expected to open in 2026 with the entire project slated for completion in 2028.

While summer in the Northern Hemisphere may be over, Thornton Tomasetti staff sure made the best of the season while it lasted. Our team members capitalized on the longer daylight hours to have some fun with colleagues, recharge and enjoy the great outdoors. At Thornton Tomasetti, we play as hard as we work, and a healthy rivalry certainly had time to shine bright on the golf course, at the bowling alley and even at the bumper car rink. Others chose to leave the friendly competition to their hometown professional sports teams while they cheered them on from the stands, and more still opted for scenic boat rides complete with refreshments and sunsets. Though the change in temperature calls for a change in itinerary, we have plenty of fall activities planned, too. #summerouting #teambonding

Act 1, Scene 1. The design team enters, shovels in hand. The curtain has gone up on a new, permanent home for Hudson Valley Shakespeare. Ground was broken this week on the 14,850-square-foot Samuel H. Scripps Theater Center in Garrison, New York. Supported on timber columns, the curved, timber-framed grid shell structure will be the focal point of the 98-acre arts complex. The open-air performance space will bring the company’s actors, audiences and back-of-house operations under one roof and provide greater flexibility. Thornton Tomasetti is providing structural engineering services for the project (https://lnkd.in/e8f4DUp3) designed by Studio Gang architects. The theater, which is targeting LEED Platinum certification, is expected to make its debut in spring 2026. #structuralengineering #theater

Colleges and universities are often ahead of the curve when it comes to sustainability, as a growing number of institutions put greater emphasis on reducing embodied carbon, achieving net zero and decarbonizing the supply chain. In our latest podcast (https://lnkd.in/eb8GV4dy), Vice President Amanda Garvey of our Sustainability and Resilience practice gives an update on how schools are demonstrating leadership in these areas, their influence to drive wider market transformation and the significant impact that structural engineers can have in reducing carbon on a project. Hosted by Corporate Responsibility Officer Amy Hattan, our "Here’s How: Embodied Carbon" is available on Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, iHeart Radio, PodBean, and Spotify. #sustainability #embodiedcarbon #highered #HeresHowClimateAction #HeresHowPodcast

The modernization of one of the nation’s oldest collegiate football stadiums is at the half-way line. A topping out ceremony was held last week for phase 1 of the renovation of The University of Kansas’ David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium in Lawrence. Thornton Tomasetti’s Construction Engineering team, which provided connection design and Tekla modeling to Turner Construction Company and erection engineering services to Doherty Steel, Inc., was on hand for the festivities. Part of the university’s Gateway District development, the stadium renovation is designed to enhance the fan experience and will include new premium seating and additional concession areas. The initial phase, which focuses on the southwest, west and north sides of the stadium, is expected to be completed by the Jayhawks’ 2025 football season. Seating capacity will be determined by future work; however, it is anticipated to accommodate more than 40,000 fans. #constructionengineering
