The 125-acre Detroit Zoo is a natural habitat for more than 2,000 animals. • Connecting People and Animals: Furthering Our Commitment to Animals Last month, the Detroit Zoo partnered with Almost Home Animal Rescue and Suburban Subaru of Troy to help 19 rescue dogs find their forever homes. This event reflects our dedication to our mission to create meaningful connections between people, animals, and the natural world, so all can thrive. Suburban Subaru of Troy looks to provide funding to help shelter pets get adopted in our community and does so through the Subaru Loves Pets pillar of the Subaru Love Promise. • A World Animal Day WIN! This is a great day to share some great gorilla news. 🦍 With a whopping total of 2,792 devices collected, the DZS secured the top spot in North America during the annual Gorillas on the Line campaign! Thanks to our e-waste warriors, we've been able to divert 7,884 devices from landfills since 2018! Recycling your old smartphone is a super smart way to allow materials like coltan to be used again – lessening the effects of mineral mining on wild gorilla habitats. Thank you to all who donated - your actions help the environment that supports all animals, especially gorillas. Help us get a jump start on 2025 by dropping your smart phone or tablet into our Gorillas On the Line bin at the Main Gate: https://bit.ly/3XUkME8 📷 Patti Truesdell.

  • Some of our colleagues recently made the trip to the beautiful City of Calgary for the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Annual Conference - the largest, most comprehensive zoo and aquarium professionals' event in the country! Hosted by the Calgary Zoo, we joined more than 2,300 professionals to explore ideas and best practices, listen to updates and new ideas, discover successes and lessons learned and experience new technology and services in the zoo and aquariums profession. Everyone who attends the AZA's Annual Conference has a common vision to protect and save species around the globe - and we're already looking forward to next year's event in the City of Tampa, hosted by our friends at The Florida Aquarium, ZooTampa at Lowry Park and Busch Gardens Tampa Bay! #ProfessionalDevelopment #Learning #Conferences #AZA #DZS

  • Delivering Care Companions and smiles to some awesome kids! We visited Corewell Health Troy this week and couldn't help sharing some tender moments from our visit. Our partnership with The Suburban Collection and Suburban Subaru of Troy helped us provide the kids with super huggable plush and a whole care kit, giving them a buddy with whom they could parallel their care. This donation helps accomplish Subaru's Love Promise pillars – learn more about the Subaru Loves Promise: https://bit.ly/3ZzxMSd

  • Making a BIG impact in the conservation of a little species. 🐌 We're continuing to contribute to the release of thousands of partula snails into Tahiti!'s Papahue Valley! Partula nodosa, also known as Polynesian tree snails, are considered extinct in the wild by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) — making this release extremely important. Of the 2,989 snails released, 1,000 were bred and raised at the Detroit Zoo. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this achievement, especially DZS zookeeper Erica Graber, whose efforts have resulted in us being a major contributor to this conservation program.

  • Being green can turn into a day at the Zoo at our next E-Recycling Event! Sunday, Sept. 22 we are teaming up with Huron-Clinton Metroparks to conserve habitats and reduce waste in the Great Lakes! For one day only, bring your old, unwanted electronics to Lake St. Clair Metropark to be sustainably recycled. As a reward, you will earn free tickets to the Detroit Zoo, redeemable for one year. Small loads (at least 17 gallons) earn one Zoo ticket, while large loads (a whole backseat of a vehicle or trunk full) earn two. Every electronic recycled reduces landfill waste, protects animal habitats and makes the world a greener place! Participants get free entry to the Metropark for the duration of the event.
