What is the value of digital twins? The value of digital twins is driven by their ability to accelerate decision-making. When technologists are figuring out whether or not to begin a digital twin project, they first must figure out why you are doing it: - What will the role of the digital twins be? - What outcomes and goals are we trying to attain? - How will we define success? - How will we measure ROI? Once you have defined these goals, you can work toward determining how you will realize the value of digital twins. In the realms of digital engineering, models-based system engineering, and advanced virtual modeling and simulation, digital twins and its associated technologies are driving positive outcomes, notably operational efficiency and sustainability across industries. By enabling rapid modeling and simulation throughout the development life cycle, digital twins make it possible to understand interactions and interdependencies and predict the effects of design changes. Through these same efficiencies and predictive capabilities, digital twins are also adding value in life-or-death health situations, natural disasters, and other catastrophic circumstances. In business terms, digital twins add value by: - Increasing productivity and reducing costs, - Optimizing energy usage and reliance on natural resources, - Promoting sustainability and reducing carbon output, - Eliminating waste, and - Avoiding critical mishaps and preventing unplanned downtime. New Digital Twin White Paper! The fundamental principle of a spatially intelligent digital twin lies in its ability to process and interpret spatial relationships between physical assets, infrastructure, and operational systems. A spatially intelligent digital twin utilizes location intelligence, geospatial context, and depending on the use case, may include real-time motion tracking into its framework. Example use cases include smart cities, logistics, energy, manufacturing, and disaster management. Our new Digital Twin Consortium white paper, "Spatially Intelligent Digital Twin Capabilities and Characteristics," explores these locational characteristics in the context of its capabilities. The white paper can be used by business executives; enterprise, business, and solution architects; system designers, and developers to understand and describe the relevance of location to digital twin capabilities. It was prepared by the DTC Architecture, Engineering, Construction, and Operations (AECO) Working Group.
