Investors are excited about “generative ai for hardware” but are missing that there’s a reason these companies have some of the best public EV/rev multiples - they have the only moats in software Eric Flaningam and I wrote "Physical design software: the only moats in SaaS" to dive into history, market, and trends in CAD, simulation, and EDA software https://lnkd.in/eG3yiH-j Industrial design tools like CAD are mission-critical software to all physical industries - from Cadence Design Systems $78B business in enabling chip design and Dassault Systèmes $50B business in mechanical parts design to Autodesk $54B business with construction modeling tools. While these tools garnered some of the highest enterprise ACVs, over the last 50 years, they have looked more or less the same. As a former mechanical engineer at Apple, I saw both the immense power but also limitations of these platforms The technical complexity (and customisation) of the incumbent platforms, major switching costs and IP risks and GTM problem in “software for hardware” makes this one of the hardest categories for a startup to break into. Historically no startup has broken into the upper echelon of companies (yet), the market has been too slow to adopt to hit startup growth targets and relatively few have been acquired at $1B+ valuations. However, we think that maybe for the first time in ~50 years there could be an opportunity to create truly 10x better products here. We believe generative AI and other technical breakthroughs will enable high-quality hardware designs at a fraction of the previous cost and change workflows for hardware, electrical, and mechanical engineers.
