Research shows a strong connection between a healthcare organization’s workplace climate and its patient outcomes. An unsupportive and negative workplace environment is associated with lower patient satisfaction, increased lower quality of care, higher risk of adverse events, and worse patient outcomes including patient mortality. These factors, in turn, drive up costs for the patients and the organization. Creating a positive healthcare organizational climate is an essential pre-requisite for improving patient experiences and outcomes. Women treated with respect and dignity during childbirth experience more positive births, empowerment, and better outcomes. But Black and Indigenous women and birthing people in particular are more likely to die, have complications, and experience trauma during childbirth. We provide highly acclaimed, evidence-based courses for perinatal care providers to help reduce inequities in pregnancy and childbirth for Black women & birthing people: https://lnkd.in/gwmmBrrJ and for Indigenous women & birthing people: https://lnkd.in/gAfwRDC4 The Dignity in Pregnancy & Childbirth courses were developed under the leadership of Rachel Hardeman, PhD, MPH, Professor and Researcher recently named among Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People of 2024, and the Center for Antiracism Research for Health Equity and the University of Minnesota School of Public Health. The California Health Care Foundation and the Minnesota Department of Health provided funding so that we at Diversity Science can make the Dignity in Pregnancy & Childbirth courses free for all perinatal organizations and providers in their states. We aim to provide the same free access for all providers in all states. To achieve our goal, we started a fundraiser at https://lnkd.in/g9QCtsJC. Support free access to the Dignity in Pregnancy & Childbirth courses for all perinatal care providers. Any donation amount will give you a discount code for 1 person to complete a Dignity in Pregnancy & Childbirth course for free at https://lnkd.in/giHHJYQF If you’ve participated in one or more of our Dignity in Pregnancy & Childbirth courses, another way you can support is by providing a testimonial of the course at this link: https://lnkd.in/gxfMzAAz To learn more about the Dignity in Pregnancy & Childbirth courses, check out these articles: https://lnkd.in/gmQKXUhR https://lnkd.in/gj6dVw7Q https://lnkd.in/gKEuxm6N https://lnkd.in/gs5rd-MS #perinatalcare #healthcare #pregnancy #childbirth #medicine #inequities

Healthcare systems are increasingly relying on AI to summarize doctor’s notes, analyze medical records, and inform medical diagnoses. But there’s still a potential pitfall with AI that needs addressing - its ability to sustain racist myths. Read more about this concern in our new blog by our very own Dr. John Dovidio and colleague Dr. Louis Penner here: https://lnkd.in/eB4ABvQG #AI #healthcare #racism #medicine

Stereotype threat triggers can be many different things such as microaggressions, being the only person of a particular demographic in a group setting, seeing others be treated with bias, stereotype-consistent imagery, etc. Have you experienced or witnessed stereotype threat while at your workplace? If so, what was the trigger of it? Share your story here: https://lnkd.in/gaapyCCM #question #QandA #stereotypes #DEI

We’ve talked a lot about stereotype threat recently. If you’ve been curious, our information on the phenomenon is based on decades of research. We put together a continuously updated list of research on stereotype threat found here: https://lnkd.in/grJKXcNs The training and courses we’ve developed about stereotype threat use evidence found in research linked above and sums up the findings in practical ways for the benefit of those who want to address and prevent its negative effects. #DEI #stereotypes #stereotypethreat #research #science

Stereotype threat occurs when a cue in one's environment makes a negative stereotype associated with an individual’s group status salient. Hundreds of studies (https://lnkd.in/grJKXcNs) have shown that stereotype threat triggers physiological and psychological processes with negative psychological, physiological, and behavioral consequences. It can profoundly impact people’s self-esteem, confidence, and sense of belonging. This process is often unconscious - we feel the effects but are unaware that it results from stereotype threat. We have short courses on stereotype threat for a variety of audiences. They include evidence-driven strategies for reducing the harmful impact of stereotype threat and creating identity-safe environments. We are making them available at no cost this month. You can find them here: https://lnkd.in/gv3td7kH Reviews of the course: “I think it was well put together and an easy way to learn about a topic I imagine many people don't know much about, but have experienced themselves.” “I enjoyed the course. I think it did a great job of naming what stereotype threat is, what some concrete examples look like, and how to manage it in the workplace and to help others who might be experiencing it. It was very practical and helpful.” “I liked the course. I thought it was very relevant to my practice.” #DEI #stereotypes #identity #healthcare #workplace #educationalmaterial

Patient bias is one potential trigger of stereotype threat, but there are many others. Take, for example, Crystal who is a highly regarded manager who had prepared extensively for a promotion meeting. She was eager to showcase her qualifications and step into a leadership role. However, something unexpected occurred as she entered the room and faced her supervisors. Crystal found herself struggling to convey her thoughts, her voice faltering. What happened? When Crystal’s supervisor commented that she would be the first woman in the role, her conscious or unconscious awareness of the untrue stereotype that women are not good leaders seemed to cast a shadow over Crystal’s performance. We discussed stereotype threat last month as it relates to patient bias. We thought it’d be interesting to dive even further into the phenomenon. Our new blog post dives into stereotype threat, what happens during it, how it impacts us, how it’s triggered, and how we can address it.
