Founded in 1955, Donohoe Development Company has developed billions of dollars of commercial real estate in the Washington region, including office, hotel, retail, industrial, residential and embassy properties. We are honored to announce that Upton Place on Wisconsin has won the NAIOP DC|MD Award of Excellence for 'Best Master Plan/Mixed-Use' project. This accolade recognizes projects that excel in promoting the mixed-use formula, incorporating at least three distinct uses. This adaptive reuse project was developed by Donohoe Development Company and Aimco and designed by SK+I Architecture. Upton Place features 689 multifamily residences including 65 affordable units, complemented by 105,000 square feet of retail space and a restored 800-space below-grade parking garage. Last night a sold-out crowd attended the Upton Place Case Study presentation. Attendees heard directly from the team that developed and implemented the transformation of a 1980’s office building into a thriving mixed-use project. The complexities of the transaction were discussed in detail, including how and why certain aspects of the original development were retained as part of the new project, their negotiations with their lender and ground lessor, finding the right joint venture partner, the design process of the different components, and community outreach. After the panel discussion, attendees toured the property and enjoyed a networking happy hour. Special thanks to our panelists—Laurie Ballenger, Steve Colangelo, Matt Hopkins, AIA AICP LEED, tom kobylenski, Larney Reed—and Debra Goldstein for moderating.
