The IIBEC So Cal Chapter held our first 2025 Technical Meeting Thursday, February 27th. This was one of our largest dinner meetings to date. Nathan Taylor, CSI, CDT of DTR Consulting Services presented “Peeling Back the Onion”. This informative and interesting presentation was an in-depth dive into a leak investigation at a high school Industrial Arts and Horticulture Building that snowballed into a remedial architecture project and then escalated further with discoveries that raised structural red flags and created an expansion to the original scope of work. This covered the timeline of the project from the initial investigation, the layers of additional discoveries, the remedial design, and the construction process while briefly covering the litigation that followed. Throughout the timeline, each layer of the onion is pulled back for discussion, as well as to inform attendees of how each of those issues was overcome. Thank you Nathan for sharing your experience and knowledge with our group!! Thank you to all that joined us!!

  • At DTR Consulting Services, Inc., we love getting technical—and it doesn’t get more technical than math! Understanding building codes and the precise calculations required for roofing wind speeds is crucial for designing safe and effective roof systems. Fortunately, roof system manufacturers can assist with these calculations for specific project locations. Recently, the DTR team had the pleasure of hosting a Lunch & Learn with Alexis Deadwiley and Donovan Hoff of Sierra Coast Products, Inc., diving into the details of roofing wind speed requirements and the technical considerations that come with them. A big thank you to Alexis and Donovan for sharing their expertise and helping our team stay ahead of the curve! #DTR #RoofingDesign #WindSpeedCalculations #BuildingCodes #buildingscienceguys #dtrconsulting #ContinuousLearning #buildingscience #enclosurespecialist

I’ve had some amazing experiences testing systems like this, great installers, stellar testing teams… and some epic failures! Testing is important but so is the team that make these systems a functioning reality! #buildingscape #curtainwall #windowtesting #buildingscience

  • Join us and the IIBEC So Cal Chapter for an insightful presentation by Nathan Taylor, CSI, CDT from DTR Consulting Services, Inc. as he presents: "Peeling Back the Onion". Nathan will dive into the hidden impacts of weather and the elements on buildings, revealing the layers of damage and strategies for addressing them. Whether you're a seasoned professional or new to the industry, this is a presentation you won’t want to miss! Register at: https://lnkd.in/gazUb47x It will also allow you to meet and congratulate this year's newly elected IIBEC Southern California Chapter President, Missy McLain! IIBEC So Cal Chapter The IIBEC So Cal Chapter invites you to our first 2025 Technical Meeting. Peeling Back the Onion - Presented by Nathan Taylor, CSI, CDT of DTR Consulting Services. This presentation is an in-depth dive into a leak investigation at a high school Industrial Arts and Horticulture Building that snowballed into a remedial architecture project and escalated further with discoveries that raised structural red flags and expanded the original scope of work. While investigating water damage, additional nonconforming conditions were uncovered and additional areas had to be opened, revealing even more questionable building practices. In the end, the structure of the south façade was replaced, as well as 1/3 of the roof structure, and the entire building was “re-skinned”. Due to the nature of the failures, this project also became a litigation case. This presentation is presented as a Case Study that covers the timeline of the project from the initial investigation, the layers of additional discoveries, the remedial design, and the construction process while briefly covering the litigation that followed. Throughout the timeline, each layer of the onion is pulled back for discussion, as well as to inform attendees of how each of those issues was overcome.
