About us

At dwg., we take great pride in seeing our work positively impacting the health and vitality of the communities, environments and economies around them. We envision a world where creativity leads great social and environmental change. Our work simultaneously celebrates an authentic sense of place while working toward an economically equitable, environmentally conscious and sustainable future. Recognizing the potential for urban architectural landscapes to encourage social and environmental change, dwg. was established in 2010 to create forward-thinking design solutions that promote healthier and more resilient communities. Our firm is passionate about urbanism, targeting our efforts at projects within high-growth urban areas. This results in a wide range of expertise including on-grade and on-structure landscape design, adaptive reuse, green infrastructure, public art installations, and urban design. We are leaders in sustainable design and low-impact development. Our award-winning, transformative landscapes are the product of careful analysis of the project’s opportunities and constraints, as well as the thoughtful implementation of sustainable strategies appropriate to each specific site. By fusing urban design principles with architectural form and the natural environment, we create innovative designs that are environmentally responsive, tactile, modern, and artfully composed. Our work enhances the built environment through the creation of engaging and meaningful places that connect to natural processes.

We had an incredible time at the Fallout Theater for our team-building day! The improv exercises pushed us out of our comfort zones and fostered quick thinking and collaboration. It’s amazing how such a fun activity can enhance both creativity and collaboration. Highly recommended!!

Nearing completion of this remarkable transformation, Springdale Green reimagines the conventional workplace environment by transforming and healing a 30-acre former petrochemical tank farm into an environmentally conscious office campus — reestablishing native meadows, woodlands, and an urban creek tributary. Designed to be immersive and engaging, an elevated boardwalk forms a continuous meandering loop that leads tenants and guests through the campus’ various eco-zones. Seeking both LEED Gold and Sustainable SITES Gold certification, this project aims to be a model for urban ecology and sustainable development in Austin. Rainwater and A/C condensate is reclaimed and stored in an underground cistern, and the site’s rain gardens and bio-retention basin are designed to address stormwater not only for the campus but also to reduce flooding in the surrounding neighborhood. We're thrilled to begin our newest documentary about Austin's Springdale Green with dwg.'s Daniel Woodroffe kicking things off. Once a decommissioned petrochemical tank farm considered 'unusable,' the 30-acre site has been entirely revitalized into an eco-friendly campus with restored and vibrant green spaces— a fantastic example of Adaptive Reuse. ♻ What a story to tell! I am honored (and excited!) to be returning to my alma mater next week to accept this year's Alumni Award for Landscape Architecture. I'll be visiting with students and giving a lecture in a building whose design process I participated in while I was president of the Landscape Architecture Student Society in 2003. The Stuckeman Family Building was designed by Overland Partners and at the time, I never thought I'd be crossing paths with architects from Texas again! And then, wouldn't you know it - a year after graduation I moved to Austin. I've now had the privilege of collaborating with the fantastic team at Overland Partners on university campuses in both San Antonio and Austin. It will be great to revisit campus next week and reflect on the past 20 years - I can't think of a more perfect way to cap a year that included a reintroduction to Pennsylvania. What a lovely homecoming!

North Rim Courtyard: A Secret Oasis in the City Located within a larger campus landscape, the North Rim Courtyard was designed as a modern interpretation of the Hortus Conclusus, or enclosed garden — a sanctuary concept dating back to medieval times. Tucked between the office and garage buildings, this space offers a private, peaceful retreat from the urban environment. The design brings a lush, botanical contrast to the surrounding campus landscape. Evergreen plants, native to the region, form the foundation, enhanced with perennials in soothing shades of purple, blue, and white for seasonal color. The palette is thoughtfully curated, using dark greens with silver-blue accents to create a calming, immersive atmosphere. A water feature at the heart of the courtyard adds a gentle, meditative soundscape, inviting visitors to disconnect from technology and reconnect with nature. This space isn’t just a garden — it’s a hidden oasis, providing moments of tranquility within a busy urban landscape. Whether sitting inside or wandering the courtyard, employees and visitors are greeted by a verdant, curated escape from the every day — a secret garden in the heart of development. We are honored and excited to announce that St. John Encampment Commons has won the prestigious Urban Land Institute Austin Impact Award for Best Public Place. This recognition is a testament to the dedication and vision behind this project that transformed a former mall parking lot into 2.4-acre urban park that serves as a gateway to the ACC Highland Campus. St. John Encampment Commons was designed to honor the site’s rich history, which dates back to the late 19th century when the land was used by the St. John Baptist Association, an African American community, for annual gatherings and educational purposes. The award-winning design epitomizes the adaptive reuse of urban spaces, demonstrating how public realms can be reimagined to serve modern needs while preserving historical significance. In advance of St. John Encampment Commons being recognized as a double finalist in tonight's ULI Austin Impact Awards for Best Project Innovation & Best Public Space, please check out designvsbuild's short film, "Parking Lots to Parks | A Documentary About Adaptive Reuse." "Can a defunct shopping mall become a place of learning and community gathering? The leadership at Austin Community College thought so, but not without the right team. This short documentary explores the revitalization of the Highland Mall into a community college and parks, but the story of this plot of land north of Austin is also about recovering 100 years of history that was almost forgotten. See how the school and architectural team replace parking lots with parks and consumerism with education." Have you checked out our latest sculpture on Congress Avenue? The custom sculpture was designed by dwg. for David Kahn to create a picture-perfect spot at “Main and Main” on Congress Avenue, within the podium of our latest patio at the base of the Scarbrough Building. The wording of this highly abstract and cubic piece was purposely designed to be viewed from only one specific point on the sidewalk — framed by the iconic Littlefield Building across the Avenue. Initiated by dwg. in 2010, the pocket patios are social experiments designed to liberate the public realm from outdated auto-dominated policies and create artistic spaces that celebrate pedestrian priority. The patios demonstrate remarkable social, environmental and economic transformations.
