A groundbreaking new study by Dynamic Planet and National Geographic Pristine Seas reveals that the world needs 85 new Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) every day for the next 6 years to reach the global target of conserving 30% of the ocean by 2030 - in national waters alone. Despite country pledges, only 8% of our oceans are currently in some form of protection. The report proposes a scalable, cost-effective pathway to urgently ramp up effective coastal marine protection–where environmental and social benefits are greatest! With the United Nations Biodiversity COP16 convening next week, these findings are a powerful reality check. Governments must significantly increase their ambitions regarding the speed and scale of effective coastal ocean protection. https://lnkd.in/eR8VTrAS Photograph by Jordi Chias, National Geographic Pristine Seas

Exciting news! Uruguay has announced the creation of a marine park around Isla de Lobos - a small island off Punta del Este whose waters are teeming with life. This haven for ocean species is also home to one of South America's largest sea lion colonies. The creation of Isla de Lobos National Park, which was signed into law late last week by President Luis Lacalle Pou, is a step forward in Uruguay's goal to boost ocean protection from 1% to 10% by 2025. This year, the Henry Luce Foundation Inc celebrates 50 years of its Luce Scholars Program, a fellowship that offers early-career leaders immersive, professional experience in Asia. Dynamic Planet's CEO and founder Kristin Rechberger began her career as a Luce Scholar in Seoul, Korea. She credits the experience not only with setting the course for her professional experiences but also meaningfully expanding her horizons and creating a lifelong commitment to connect with people across differing cultural, political, and economic backgrounds. While it's not surprising that only a third of marine protected areas have meaningful conservation measures in place, we can and must do better. Our one and only ocean needs us to step up and implement real protections and effective management. #30x30 #MPA #oceanprotection

On average, Small Island Developing States' national waters (the area of the ocean that is under their jurisdiction and within their exclusive economic zone, or EEZ) is 28 times their land mass. They rely heavily on their marine resources for their livelihoods and economies, but the ocean also plays important roles in island nations' histories, cultures, and sense of place. Small Island Developing States - or Large Ocean States - as they more accurately like to call themselves, are critical partners in our collective global quest for a healthy, protected, and thriving ocean. The issues of these island nations represent, in each place, the same interconnected issues of us all on planet Earth. More: https://lnkd.in/eQASPNDh

This #WorldOceanDay, we are celebrating Large Ocean States and the bold, forward-thinking steps that many are taking to protect their waters.
Small Island Developing States, or Large Ocean States, as they more accurately like to call themselves, are incredibly resilient, surviving all sorts of threats throughout history. They rely heavily on the ocean for their livelihoods and economies, but the sea also plays important roles in island nations' histories, cultures, and sense of place. Now, global warming brings sea level rise and bleaching events to their once-pristine reefs. Large Ocean States are critical partners in our collective global quest for a healthy, protected, and thriving ocean. The issues of these island nations represent, in each place, the same interconnected issues of us all on planet Earth. This #WorldOceanDay, we are celebrating Large Ocean States and the bold, forward-thinking steps that many are taking to protect their homelands. The inspirational story of one such nation - the Pacific island of Niue - is the topic of our latest Dynamic Planet newsletter: https://lnkd.in/e2q_-EHm Photo by Nova West/National Geographic

There are few places on Earth like Niue. This small island nation in the Pacific is home to some of the most stunning reefs on the planet — reefs that have sustained and nourished the Niuean people for generations. Now, in the face of a rapidly warming climate, this tight-knit community is taking action to protect their ocean and their way of life. “Protecting Paradise: The Story of Niue” is a love letter to the ocean and to those who are taking bold steps to safeguard their waters, their communities, and their futures. “Protecting Paradise: The Story of Niue” premieres on the National Geographic Channel on June 7, 2024 at 10:00PM EDT, and worldwide on the Disney+ platform on World Ocean Day, June 8, 2024.

Habitat protection and restoration is one way to protect the biodiversity of a place. For example, through our work alongside National Geographic Society's Pristine Seas, we know that the biomass of fish increases five-fold in marine protected areas where fishing is banned within a decade. Re:wild just published a paper in Science showing that terrestrial conservation actions are also effective at restoring biodiversity, and are ready to be scaled up collectively worldwide. And groups are bringing species back from the brink – for example African Parks just officially launched the rewilding phase of ‘Rhino Rewild’, an ambitious plan to rewild 2,000 southern white rhino into secure protected areas in Africa over the next 10 years with a first successful translocation. Thank you to everyone working to protect and restore the lands and waters critical to all life on earth.
