‘Real conversation between people who are really doing something for the planet now.’ Today, Nkamunu Patita and Lydia Zemke both attended the event organised by Savimbo, International Carbon Registry, #jaguara, Cercarbono & EcoRegistry, with Patita speaking at one of the sessions and Lydia moderating another, on behalf of EarthAcre. Thankful for the opportunity to share some of EarthAcre’s experiences in the field, and to hear from other projects making an impact on the targets laid out by the Kunming-Montreal Global #Biodiversity Framework. 🌴 From the Amazon to Africa - Five things we learnt during Day 7 of #COP16Colombia 1️⃣ Innovation and creativity to address biodiversity loss 🌆 During our event with NATURE & PEOPLE FOUNDATION on Urban Biodiversity Credits (UBC), Tatiana Schor and Kobie Brand highlighted how UBC projects can meet cities’ needs for nature-based solutions to the climate and nature crisis. 🍃 Marcelo Furtado emphasised the potential that emerging UBCs hold for accelerating private finance to: 🔸 Help mitigation strategies 🔸 Address adaptation challenges 🔸 Deal with loss and damage. 🌿 Marcelo stressed that extreme weather events in Brazil, such as the flood in the South and the drought in the Amazon, have made UBC projects even more important. 2️⃣ UBC pilot projects are showing progress 🇧🇷 Sara Eppel spoke about how Rio de Janeiro’s pioneering UBC pilot project is helping to mitigate excess heat while also generating new finance for green infrastructure. 3️⃣ Biodiversity credit projects are continuing to grow and evolve across Africa 📗 During an event with the African Natural Capital Alliance and FSD Africa, we discussed our new African Biocredits Landscape report, which maps and analyses the emerging landscape for biodiversity credits across the continent. 👤 Dorothy Maseke ,CFIRM moderated the panel discussion with support from Monique Atouguia. ✴️ Speaking on the panel Prof. Dr. Martin R. Stuchtey (The Landbanking Group) highlighted that the report not only shows that biocredits are on the rise but also that the value proposition for these mechanisms is getting clearer and clearer. 4️⃣ We need to mobilise all the tools at our disposal to finance nature 🧩 Helge Mahne (African Parks Network) emphasised, “We are in a situation with nature finance where we do not have the luxury of excluding any tools of funding”. ⚡ Talking about the methods to support biodiversity conservation in Africa, Innocent Onah, PhD (African Development Bank Group) said, “We must look for a way to go beyond the classical financing sources, to go more innovative.” 5️⃣ Lessons must be learnt from the previous mistakes 📋 Tapiwa Makiwa stressed that after 10 years, we need to make concerted efforts to learn from the errors of the carbon credits markets. ✅ He spoke about the need for job creation and social and economic issues to be integrated into biodiversity credit projects. 🌲 Lydia Zemke (EarthAcre) emphasised that “biodiversity is different”, highlighting the non-fungible characteristics of natural ecosystems that are not interchangeable once destroyed. 🎯 Building on this, Lydia flagged the importance of maintaining a commitment to the 30x30 goal of the #GBF by investing in our intact natural ecosystems instead of using biocredits to compensate for nature loss. 🔔 Follow us on Linkedin to stay updated with our daily activities during COP16 Colombia. Thrilled that EarthAcre will be working with Milkywire and Klarna on their Nature Transformation Fund (https://lnkd.in/eYsXr_BM). Together, we will channel critical financing to indigenous landowners living in and stewarding critical ecosystems in Kenya. Onwards. 🌍 Exciting News: New Projects Added to Milkywire's Nature Transformation Fund. In Jill Raval’s latest article, she officially welcomes five initiatives into the Nature Transformation Fund (NTF), a strategic partnership with Klarna, expanding our focus on marine and freshwater ecosystems, innovative financing, and community empowerment. These projects are working to protect vital ecosystems while creating sustainable livelihoods for local communities. Read the article: https://lnkd.in/d6uWV7HQ Here’s a quick look at the projects: Rare is creating five community-led marine conservation areas in Indonesia through the world’s first Small-Scale Fisheries Impact Bond. NTF funding supports formalizing the boundaries of these areas and ensuring sustainable fisheries management. Blue Alliance Marine Protected Areas is restoring coral reefs across 600,000 hectares in Indonesia by linking Marine Protected Areas with sustainable businesses. NTF funding helps prepare these businesses for investment, benefiting local communities. EarthAcre is generating carbon and biodiversity credits on community-managed lands in Kenya. NTF funding will provide direct cash payments and contribute to the development of a platform to manage payments, promoting sustainable land use. Conservation Finance Alliance’s incubator supports innovative conservation finance solutions globally. NTF funding will go towards the incubator’s third round. Indian Institute for Human Settlements is aiming to restore urban lakes and wetlands in Bengaluru to improve water security. NTF funding supports restoration planning and long-term monitoring. This is a special moment for the Nature Transformation Fund as we transition from the Give One framework to a more targeted focus on actions that can be supported by companies interested in contributing to global biodiversity goals beyond their value chains. 🌱 Swipe through to see images from the projects and get a closer look at the impact we’re creating. 📸 #Sustainability #NatureConservation #MarineEcosystems #CommunityEmpowerment #InnovativeFinancing #ClimateAction #Milkywire #NatureTransformationFund
