🌎This #WorldEnvironmentDay, C5MI is all in on sustainability by taking a hands-on approach to protecting our planet. In April, C5MI funded a mission with Earthrace Conservation to patrol the Marine Protected Area of Isla del Coco, 300 miles off the coast of mainland Costa Rica. We sent two of our leaders, Ruben Perez and Spencer Ocean, CSCP, PMP, to join forces with Captain Pete Bethune in supporting this critical effort. Together, they also tore down the island's old ranger station to prepare for its reconstruction. We are proud to fund and support organizations that are actively protecting our living planet. Non-profit volunteering during corporate vacation? I just returned from my second mission with the organization Earthrace Conservation in Costa Rica. This time, a once-in-a-lifetime expedition to iconic Cocos Island 550 km offshore, UNESCO World Heritage Site, and known for an incredible marine biodiversity with hammerheads, tiger sharks, whale sharks, mantas, turtles… Our mission: 1) checking for any illegal fishing activities in the Marine Protected Area (MPA) around the island (on their last trip they found an illegal FAD (“Fishing Aggregation Device”), which they removed). And 2) deconstruct an old ranger station on the island – 3 days of continuous work to tear down a complete building, smashing concrete and carrying a few tons up into the jungle, burning most of the wood and returning all remaining trash to our main ship, our Modoc. #Volunteering for wildlife conservation during vacation was hard work, but we were rewarded with incredible experiences: 🔸 Becoming a team - imagine 11 diverse volunteers from all over the world (Germany, Canada, US, Costa Rica) with different languages, cultures and backgrounds coming together to support wildlife conservation 🔸Fantastic team work during our voyage (6 days in total) with 24h shifts in the bridge or engine room 🔸 Outstanding wildlife encounters – from flying fish, dolphins swimming in bioluminescence at the ships bow, a face-to-face encounter with a hammerhead shark, observing hunting dolphins, jumping baby dolphins... 🔸 Being lucky to dive with sharks - especially hammerheads, and some black and white tip sharks. Seeing sharks got rare… the global abundance of oceanic sharks and rays has declined by nearly three-quarters (71%) over the last 50 years primarily due to overfishing. 🔸 Placing a foot on a famous island, which is not allowed to tourists. 🔸 Being fully remote 550 km in the middle of nowhere (or 3 days straight diving away from land) with no infrastructure, internet connection or medical care 🔸 Some surprises along the way: broken boats, a stolen bag & wallet, the loss of a GoPro camera, lost footage… Especially seeing the amazing wildlife strengthens the importance to support Earthrace Conservation in our mission to patrol the 15 MPAs in #CostaRica to save endangered wildlife. #Wildlifeconservation #MarineProtectedAreas #IllegalFishing #Sharks

Earthshot Prize Winner WildAid are protecting marine life in Costa Rica! 🌊 Cocos Island, located 500 km off Costa Rica’s Pacific shore and the inspiration for the movie Jurassic Park, is a haven for marine wildlife like giant manta rays, whale sharks, and hammerhead sharks. WildAid recently supported the installation of a long-range radar.
