Special voyage to iconic Cocos Island - 300 miles off the coast of mainland Costa Rica, UNESCO #WorldHeritage, and known for an incredible marine biodiversity of hammerheads, tiger sharks, whale sharks, mantas, turtles. Our mission was to patrol the Marine Protected Area of Isla del Coco, and deconstructed an old ranger station, so nature and wildlife can take back this area. A huge thanks to C5MI for funding this important project to protect our planet. ⬇️ Enjoy the video to see how our crew got this special job done - awesome teamwork 🔥 ABOUT US: We support local ranger patrols by providing assets like fuel, boats and crew to protect precious wildlife and their habitats in the 15 MPAs on the Pacific Coast of #costarica. Saving Animals. Saving Marine Life. Saving Habitat.
About us
Earthrace Conversation was founded in 2010 by Environmental-Activist and Conservationist Captain Pete Bethune to protect wildlife and its habitat. Since then, we have successfully run various global conservation missions and patrols in partnership with local governments. With a passionate and highly-skilled team of over 20 people we target environmental crimes such as illegal fishing, pet trade, logging and wildlife poaching. On our missions, we get supported by our most-love crew member Appa, our tracking and anti-poaching dog trained by “Animals saving Animals” team. Base of operations is our ship M/Y Modoc, a former US Navy / US Coastguard vessel. Currently, we are partnering with Costa Rican & Panamanian governments and local wildlife rangers in offshore and jungle patrols to protect what are some of the world’s greatest National Parks. Support our mission and join our crew - connect with us!

🌎This #WorldEnvironmentDay, C5MI is all in on sustainability by taking a hands-on approach to protecting our planet. In April, C5MI funded a mission with Earthrace Conservation to patrol the Marine Protected Area of Isla del Coco, 300 miles off the coast of mainland Costa Rica. We sent two of our leaders, Ruben Perez and Spencer Ocean, CSCP, PMP, to join forces with Captain Pete Bethune in supporting this critical effort. Together, they also tore down the island's old ranger station to prepare for its reconstruction. We are proud to fund and support organizations that are actively protecting our living planet. Non-profit volunteering during corporate vacation? I just returned from my second mission with the organization Earthrace Conservation in Costa Rica. This time, a once-in-a-lifetime expedition to iconic Cocos Island 550 km offshore, UNESCO World Heritage Site, and known for an incredible marine biodiversity with hammerheads, tiger sharks, whale sharks, mantas, turtles… Our mission: 1) checking for any illegal fishing activities in the Marine Protected Area (MPA) around the island (on their last trip they found an illegal FAD (“Fishing Aggregation Device”), which they removed). And 2) deconstruct an old ranger station on the island – 3 days of continuous work to tear down a complete building, smashing concrete and carrying a few tons up into the jungle, burning most of the wood and returning all remaining trash to our main ship, our Modoc. #Volunteering for wildlife conservation during vacation was hard work, but we were rewarded with incredible experiences: 🔸 Becoming a team - imagine 11 diverse volunteers from all over the world (Germany, Canada, US, Costa Rica) with different languages, cultures and backgrounds coming together to support wildlife conservation 🔸Fantastic team work during our voyage (6 days in total) with 24h shifts in the bridge or engine room 🔸 Outstanding wildlife encounters – from flying fish, dolphins swimming in bioluminescence at the ships bow, a face-to-face encounter with a hammerhead shark, observing hunting dolphins, jumping baby dolphins... 🔸 Being lucky to dive with sharks - especially hammerheads, and some black and white tip sharks. Seeing sharks got rare… the global abundance of oceanic sharks and rays has declined by nearly three-quarters (71%) over the last 50 years primarily due to overfishing. 🔸 Placing a foot on a famous island, which is not allowed to tourists. 🔸 Being fully remote 550 km in the middle of nowhere (or 3 days straight diving away from land) with no infrastructure, internet connection or medical care 🔸 Some surprises along the way: broken boats, a stolen bag & wallet, the loss of a GoPro camera, lost footage… Especially seeing the amazing wildlife strengthens the importance to support Earthrace Conservation in our mission to patrol the 15 MPAs in #CostaRica to save endangered wildlife. #Wildlifeconservation #MarineProtectedAreas #IllegalFishing #Sharks

Earthshot Prize Winner WildAid are protecting marine life in Costa Rica! 🌊 Cocos Island, located 500 km off Costa Rica’s Pacific shore and the inspiration for the movie Jurassic Park, is a haven for marine wildlife like giant manta rays, whale sharks, and hammerhead sharks. WildAid recently supported the installation of a long-range radar. This helps strengthen surveillance on the island to protect against illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing. 🇨🇷 We can't mention Costa Rica's green efforts without a shoutout to our 2021 Winner to Protect and Restore Nature: Republic of Costa Rica! Captain Pete Bethune spotted during a great partnership with WildAid! What a view on iconic Cocos Island, known for its stunning marine wildlife and one of the best places in the world to view species like sharks, rays, tuna, turtles and dolphins. We will continue to patrol the Marine Protected Area to protect this #biodiversity hotspot.
Cocos Island, located 500 km off Costa Rica’s Pacific shore and the inspiration for the movie Jurassic Park, is a haven for marine wildlife like giant manta rays, whale sharks, and hammerhead sharks. Due to its rich biodiversity, the Island has been protected as The Cocos Island National Park (CINP) since 1978. In order to strengthen surveillance of CINP and protect against illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, which harms vulnerable marine ecosystems, WildAid’s marine team recently supported the installation of a long-range radar. The radar complements the control and surveillance of the recently inaugurated control center and adds a much-needed additional layer of surveillance that can continuously monitor the area even when rangers aren’t on-site. We’re proud to work with Costa Rica in Cocos to protect its vital marine habitats and wildlife!

Thanks for your amazing support in 2023 and off to 2024! 🚀 We are looking back at dozens of fishing patrols across Costa Rica’s Marine Protected Areas, many speaking events from Captain Pete Bethune to share our mission and the importance of wildlife conservation, lot’s fun moments with our anti-poaching dog Appa and the list goes on…. Without our Park Ranger partnership with SINAC, Earthrace supporters and volunteers #modocians from all across the globe, we could not be as successful in protecting the world’s precious biodiversity. 🌎 Looking forward to exciting missions in 2024 - hoping to see you soon at our Modoc. Happy days! 🤙 ☑ Info on volunteering on our website https://lnkd.in/grz2gXUc #conservation #wildlife #biodiversity #volunteering
