Earthshot raised a Series A and that’s not what really matters. I’m really glad to share that Earthshot recently closed a $5.5m Series A to serve land stewards everywhere to get paid for regeneration, support offtakers' due diligence, and facilitate project investments. This last year we’ve been working mostly under the radar, growing with the huge influx of demand from partners looking for rigorous alternatives to conventional carbon developers. Earthshot has worked on more than 60 reforestation and conservation projects, directed more than $55m in project finance, and we are profitable and hiring across all teams. In the self-reinforcing swirl of venture capital, it sometimes seems like fundraising is the most important news there is. It’s not. The news is ecological heroes addressing the greatest challenge of our time. It is the 15th straight month of record heat, unprecedented in human history, consistently above the 1.5 degree target that used to be the policy goal for a stable climate. We must deploy .5% of global GDP (around $500BN per year) for ecosystem restoration and conservation, and we’re a fraction of the way there. Our partners at BirdLife International have done epic work across the globe, working on new projects together in Cambodia, Paraguay, Indonesia, Madagascar, and numerous other places. Tree Aid did a huge expansion of their reforestation operation in Burkina Faso, with more countries in the African Great Green Wall next up. Corporate, NGO, and government partners across Guinea, Mexico, Colombia, Papua New Guinea, Panama, Peru, Brazil, Mongolia, and more have trusted us to support their projects end to end. Trust and integrity is what this market needs to scale. Earthshot’s mission is too important to be subject to the hype cycles of venture. This is why we’re very excited to be supported by a team of investors with long-term conviction: Acorn Pacific Ventures, Future Ventures, Earth Foundry, One Small Planet, Parameter Ventures, Sand Hill Angels, Resilient Earth Capital, and more. Thank you to everyone who has joined the journey so far. If you’re reading this, feel the responsibility to act, and want to apply your talent, capital and will toward ecological regeneration, please reach out.

✍ from the field in Cambodia 🇰🇭 Earthshot Labs has partnered with Rising Phoenix (RP) in Cambodia to develop a REDD+ project in the Siem Pang Wildlife Sanctuary (SPWS). Our amazing team members, Cecilia Simon and Camila Meza-Cuadra, visited the sanctuary in June to meet the RP team and understand the project. Earthshot will work closely with RP to undergo an extensive community consultation process and develop a Project Description Document to register the project. Here's what they reported back... The Siem Pang Wildlife Sanctuary is under the threat of forest loss due to low agricultural productivity and commodity crop expansion that are pushing the agricultural frontier into the forest. Further, logging and hunting pose additional pressures. The loss of forest is a threat to the global climate, and it also poses a short-term threat to communities livelihoods from non-timber forest products (NTFPs) such as mushroom collection and to a unique and highly endangered wildlife. The REDD+ project will build on Rising Phoenix's work in Siem Pang Wildlife Sanctuary to support communities' livelihoods to disincentivize land encroachment. The Ibis Rice program increases profitability of rice farming while reducing human and environmental health degradation through its organic standard. Eco-tourism will bring new green jobs to the area. This effort is supported by educational programs like RP’s fast-expanding English teaching program. RP further has a significant biodiversity program that includes re-wilding. This outstanding effort is already returning species to the area where they had disappeared due to hunting and forest loss. RP’s vulture restaurant sustains the local vulture population protecting the last individuals in Cambodia. The project further monitors and protects several threatened species like eld’s deer and bantengs. Last but not least, the NGO’s scouts are constantly monitoring the forest to prevent and stop encroachment and hunting, working hand in hand with the Ministry of the Environment's rangers. Through our team’s visit we collected extensive information, led workshops to align on the REDD+ roadmap and set up next steps towards project registration. We were highly impressed by Rising Phoenix’ professional and motivated team and out-of-the-box approach to conservation. We look forward to this long term collaboration towards a thriving forest, wildlife and local communities.  🌏

Notes from the field ✍ 🇮🇩 Our colleague Olivia Palma recently shared an inspiring account of a site visit to Indonesia. It's incredible to witness firsthand how conservation efforts and community collaboration are making a tangible difference. Take a read... "Before we left for the Burung Indonesia site visit on Flores Island, a friend sent us a message wishing us luck and hoping we’d get to see primary rainforest. Since 1950, Indonesia has lost 72% of its intact forests—more than 74 million hectares of irreplaceable rainforest. This extensive deforestation is driven by the production of commodities such as paper, palm oil, rubber, nickel mining, and other development activities. We were fortunate enough to arrive in Mbeliling, surrounded by thick forests and the biggest tree trunks. "Mbeliling," in the local Manggarai language, means "to cool off from the sun under the canopy." Burung Indonesia has been operating here for 17 years in collaboration with the local Manggarai community to not only stop deforestation, which destroys habitats for bird species but also to foster a culture of conservation. Conservation programs have been implemented in elementary school classrooms, and communities have been taught to establish and maintain ´family forests´, productive agroforestry systems, to provide a sustainable economic alternative, reducing pressure on natural forests. Tibur, our guide and the Flores Program Manager, eloquently explained how he educates communities about the vital role birds play in their lives, illustrating how these creatures have shaped the forests they inhabit today and emphasizing that the future of these birds rests in their hands and their children's hands. We have been collaborating with BirdLife International through their Accelerator Program to conduct technical carbon development, assessing both carbon and financial viability to support their partners globally in creating financially sustainable solutions for their conservation and reforestation efforts. Each project we undertake emphasizes that, despite its many growing pains, the carbon market offers a solution for local community members and groups to create financially regenerative systems. These systems enable them to sustain and expand their work without constantly fundraising or halting programs due to a lack of donor support. The Flores landscape is home to over 30,000 community members and numerous bird species, flora, and fauna. Burung Indonesia’s efforts, rooted in understanding and collaboration with the Manggarai community, include ecosystem services monitoring, microfinance programs, and ecotourism development. Their approach not only protects vital habitats but also empowers the local community to thrive. Together with partners like BirdLife International, we can support the creation of a sustainable model for conservation and economic growth that can create lasting change."
