ecomaine provides comprehensive long-term solid waste solutions in a safe, environmentally responsible, economically sound manner, and is a leader in raising public awareness of sustainable waste management strategies. ecomaine is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization based in Portland, serving 400,000 people in 73 member communities across Maine. ecomaine operates three waste management facilities - a waste-to-energy plant, a landfill/ashfill site and a recycling operation - and employs full-time staff in environmental education, giving tours and presentations. We are dedicated supporters of environmental protection, as evidenced by our ISO 14001 certification for excellence in environmental management.

🌟 Reflecting on an Inspiring Week 🌟 Last week, IDEXX had the honor of hosting our 3rd annual Community Partner Exxpo. This year, we welcomed 34 incredible nonprofits to our site, compared to 22 last year and 10 our first year. The growth of this event is a testament to the impactful work these organizations do within our community. The wide range of services provided by these nonprofits is invaluable, each addressing critical needs and making a profound difference. From supporting youth, families, food insecurity and housing, to promoting global health and well-being, to STEM education and building awareness of bioscience careers in Maine, to training service dogs, to caring for and rescuing animals and mammals, to supporting our recalibrated Veterans, to leading global climate research, to innovating environmental, water, and recycling programs, to connecting people with places through trail networks—their missions are as diverse as they are essential. Our purposeful employees and leaders engaged directly with these community partners, learning more about their missions and how they can support through volunteer opportunities. Our communities are stronger and more resilient because of the tangible impact of these amazing nonprofits. Last week, I had the pleasure of visiting ecomaine, Maine’s only community-owned, non-profit waste management company with Tom's of Maine, getting to witness firsthand what happens to our waste downstream. For a waste enthusiast like myself, this was incredible! Their facility operates a state-of-the-art single-sort recycling system and a Waste-to-Energy facility for over 70 communities in Maine. Ecomaine’s Waste-to-Energy (WTE) plant converts non-recyclable waste into electricity. I learned that this process not only powers their facilities, and electric vehicles, but also provides energy for approximately 15,000 homes in Maine. WTE is a great alternative to the traditional raw waste landfill (reducing GHG emissions by around 90%), but it doesn’t solve the crux of our waste problem. To do that we got to start from the beginning. 1)Refuse what you don’t need, 2) Reduce what you can, 3) Reuse 4) Repair 5) Recycle only what you cannot refuse, reduce, or reuse.
