♻️ It’s Global Recycling Day! 🌍 According to the Global Recycling Foundation, recyclables save over 700 million tons in CO2 emissions annually — projected to increase to one billion tons by 2030! 🌱💨 A key component in the recycling supply chain is a Materials Recycling Facility (MRF), which can process thousands of tons of recyclables each year. 🏭🔄 SWANA CEO Amy Lestition Burke, MA, FASAE, CAE and Senior Director of Public Policy & Communications, Kristyn Oldendorf, have recently toured many MRFs to learn firsthand about their recycling efforts. 🚛 From visiting the Delaware Solid Waste Authority, Inc. MRF to the Casella Waste Systems, Inc. MRF in New York to the Balcones Recycling MRF in San Antonio, TX, SWANA has gained an up-close look at what recycling systems across the country can aspire to. ✨ The mission of Global Recycling Day has two parts: ✅ Advocate for a global recycling approach supported by world leaders 🤝 ✅ Improve the understanding of waste as a resource on an individual level 🏡 SWANA is supporting Recycling in Action month to show the real impact of recycling. In May, MRFs will open their doors to the community to see firsthand how recyclables are sorted, processed, and turned into new products. Staples has launched a nationwide battery recycling program in partnership with ERI, allowing customers to drop off used batteries at all 1,000 stores in exchange for store credits. This initiative, alongside growing industry efforts and new legislative measures, aims to divert billions of batteries from landfills, recover valuable materials, and address the challenges of safe battery collection and recycling. #waste #recycling #batteries #safety #diversion

Thanks for visiting!
Last month, DEL-MEM student Will Addis and DEL Professor Jeremy Pare visited ecomaine, a cutting-edge waste management facility that uses a “waste-to-energy” technology to provide power for 15,000 homes in Portland, Maine. Jeremy and Will also visited Orange Bike Brewing Company for a look into their gluten-free brewing process and their focus on social and environmental initiatives. --- This is just one of many examples of how our DEL students and faculty stay engaged in their local communities and promote exemplary environmental advocacy. Kudos Will & Jeremy! --- Make sure to follow the Environment+ socials for more updates from our DEL cohorts later this Spring! ---- #DukeEnvironmentalLeadership #DukeUniversity #DukeNicholasSchool #DukeEnvironmentPlus
