EDG attended the Grand Opening of the Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center with remarks by President Joe Biden, First Lady Dr. Jill Biden and Katy Perry and performances by Elton John and Cynthia Erivo. The opening culminates nearly six years of development and a $3.2 million investment since it's designation as a National Monument by President Obama in 2016. EDG was the architect, engineer and a founding partner for the project. Design + Restore EDG Architecture + Engineering is proud to to have been involved of all aspects of the project including: extensive restoration of the landmarked façade; comprehensive structural, mechanical, engineering and ADA upgrades to the space; and full architectural design of the interior “Our firm is honored to be involved in this momentous project,” said Richard Unterthiner, Design Director and Principal at EDG Architecture + Engineering. “With so much history at play, our design aims to weave the memories of the space and the stories told in the exhibits into one cohesive experience.” Additional speakers included Mellon Foundation President Elizabeth Alexander, Humans Rights Campaign (HRC) President Kelley Robinson, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland, Google executive Torrence Boone, SNMVC Founding Partner Henry Muñoz III, Alina Torres-Zickler and Kaila Torres-Zickler, and singer songwriter and SNMVC Founding Partner Adam Lambert, as well as U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, New York Governor Kathy Hochul and New York City Assembly Member Deborah Glick.   Notable guests in attendance included actor Alan Cumming, actor and comedian Billy Eichner, Australian drag queen Courtney Act, actor Gayle Rankin, model Irina Shayk, actor Jonathan Groff, actor Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka, actor Jelani Alladin, actor Erich Bergen, model and influencer Olivia Ponton and artist FEWOCiOUS.  Photo credits courtesy of Getty images, PrideLive and EDG Architecture + Engineering.  

In anticipation of the Grand Opening this evening of our project, The Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center, we are humbled by the press that this historic project has received so far including articles by the New York Times, Fast Company, the Today Show, Curbed, Forbes, Katie Couric Media, and more. "With so much history at play, our design aims to weave the memories of the space and the stories told in the exhibits into one cohesive experience."  As a program of Pride Live, the SNMVC is the first LGBTQIA+ visitor center within the National Park Service. Pride Live drove the charge for the 7.7-acre National Monument, designated by Barack Obama in 2016. The Visitor Center is located at 51 Christopher Street, in a portion of the original building that housed the historic Stonewall Inn, and will feature several exhibits that commemorate the legacy of Stonewall.
