When an employee experiences the loss of a loved one, it’s essential to approach support with genuine intention and thoughtfulness. While traditional gestures like sending flowers are kind, they often fall short in addressing the deeper needs of those grieving. In times of loss, employees are navigating intense emotions and logistical challenges, and the support they receive can have a lasting impact. By taking the time to understand what would be most meaningful—whether it’s contributing to a cause important to the family or providing assistance that addresses their immediate needs—you demonstrate a deeper level of empathy and care. This approach not only respects the gravity of their loss but also acknowledges the complexity of grief. Offering meaningful support reflects a broader commitment to the well-being of your employee, showing that your concern extends beyond the workplace and into the realities of their personal lives. Empathy started with a simple mission: to change the way the world deals with loss. Grief is a universal experience, yet it’s often shrouded in silence and discomfort. On Grief Awareness Day, we invite you to join us in breaking the taboo and openly discussing the reality of loss. In support of this mission, we’re introducing the Grief Guide Generator—an interactive tool to help families communicate their needs during difficult times. Whether your grief is fresh or from years ago, this tool is for you. Share it with your community to foster understanding and support for all. Loss is very hard—but together we can make it a bit less hard, for everyone, every day. Create your own Grief Support Guide here: https://hubs.la/Q02N9tch0 #GriefAwarenessDay

The loss of a loved one is an incredibly challenging experience, yet our society often avoids discussing it due to discomfort with the inevitability and difficulty of death. This same discomfort can make supporting someone who is grieving awkward, leaving us at a loss for words. Despite the universal nature of grief, finding the right words and understanding what to avoid can be tough. Similarly, expressing our own needs or feelings after a loss can be difficult. Even answering a well-meaning question like, 'What can I do?' can feel overwhelming. Many of us lack the language or tools to communicate our grief effectively. We’d love to hear your thoughts—why do you think it’s so hard to talk about grief, and what can we do to make these conversations easier?

Grief is often surrounded by a strong taboo, leaving many of us feeling isolated and alone in our pain. But the reality is that loss touches us all. Ignoring this universal experience only deepens the suffering and extends its scars. Grief Awareness Day is right around the corner, and serves as a crucial opportunity to challenge the silence and acknowledge that bereavement is a profoundly human experience we all face. By breaking the taboo and fostering open discussions about grief, we can provide the understanding and support that families need. Let’s use this day to start the conversations that bring comfort, connection, and healing to those who need it most.

Grief Awareness Day is just a week away— does your company have a plan in place? Building a culture of care at your organization means showing up for your employees during life's most challenging moments. One of those critical moments is the loss of a loved one. Talking about grief can be hard, especially at work. Grieving employees may struggle to share how they feel or what they need. Although grief is a universal experience, we all grapple with knowing what to say and what to avoid. Recognizing Grief Awareness Day supports ongoing efforts to care for bereaved employees, combat grief illiteracy in the workplace, and foster a compassionate culture. Not sure how to recognize the day at your organization? DM us for a plan.
