This looks like and exciting event from On Think Tanks! Mobilising funding from Africa was one of the priorities flagged by African researchers as part of the EERA process facilitated by Education Sub Saharan Africa (ESSA) and Southern Hemisphere. Find out more about the researchers' perspective here: Enhancing Education Research in Africa (EERA) | ESSA.
CALLING EDUCATION RESEARCH FUNDERS We are pleased to invite you to an upcoming African Education Research Funding Consortia (https://lnkd.in/exSyQcMT) event focused on Building Resilient Education Research Systems: Strengthening Domestic Funding for Long-term Sustainability in Africa. ➡️Date: March 18, 2025 ➡️Time: 2-3 PM (WAT)/ 9- 10 AM EST ➡️Venue: Zoom [Please register here https://lnkd.in/eyRaZqxK] Why Attend? With philanthropy and development aid for Africa predominantly led by Global North funders, the fragility of current funding structures has become evident, particularly in light of recent disruptions like the USAID funding freeze. This session will explore how local funders can play a crucial role in strengthening domestic funding ecosystems and ensuring sustainable support for African education research. Key Discussion Areas: 👉Identifying challenges limiting domestic funding mobilization 👉Exploring inefficiencies in local funding structures and opportunities for improvement 👉Proposing actionable solutions to enhance long-term sustainability 👉Encouraging collaboration between local and global funders 👉Empowering local funders with strategies for resilience Speakers: Gail Campbell is the CEO of the Zenex Foundation. She has been involved in developmental grant making for over 20 years, with a particular emphasis in school education. Gail currently serves on the boards of a number of non-profit educational organisations, including the board of Sci-Bono Discovery Centre, the Gauteng Education Development Trust and the KwaZulu-Natal Education Development Trust. She also serves the board of the National Research Foundation and the Independent Philanthropy Association of South Africa. Dr. Randa Grob-Zakhary is the Founder and CEO of Education.org. She was also a Board Member and Chair of Strategy Committee at the Global Partnership for Education. As former CEO of the The LEGO Foundation and Global Head of Education at Porticus, she launched strategic transformations contributing to systems-level change. Matthew Wallace is a Senior Program Specialist at the International Development Research Centre (IDRC). Matthew works closely with Science Granting Councils which support councils across Africa to fund high-quality research that aligns with national development priorities. This interactive session will feature a fishbowl discussion with key stakeholders, allowing for deep engagement and practical takeaways. We look forward to your participation in this important conversation. Please confirm your attendance at your earliest convenience. The African Education Research Funding Consortium is supported by Echidna Giving and facilitated by On Think Tanks.

Happy International Women's Day. Women remain underrepresented in education research across Africa—facing barriers in funding, authorship, and publishing opportunities. While some progress has been made, deep inequalities continue to persist in career growth, leadership, and access to global platforms. This #IWD2025, let’s move beyond awareness and #AccelerateAction for gender equity in research.

Education data systems in Africa face many challenges, from fragmented digital platforms to limited access and use of evidence for decision-making. For education data to drive real impact, we need more human-centered, collaborative, and Africa-led approaches to unlocking its potential. Later this month, at CIES - Comparative & International Education Society, Laté A. Lawson, Ph.D will be on a panel to explore solutions to bridge the gap between data producers and users, ensuring evidence informs policy and practice. Join us in this critical discussion.

Reducing reliance on international donors is crucial for strengthening education research in Africa. Proposed Intervention 2 focuses on mobilising local funding from governments, think tanks, philanthropies, and the private sector. By fostering partnerships and influencing these stakeholders, we can create sustainable mechanisms for long-term investment in education research. A thriving research ecosystem depends on funders adopting a long-term vision—one that prioritises local ownership, reduces dependency, and ensures impactful, Africa-led solutions. Several countries in Africa currently have dedicated science granting councils or national research funds. These include, for example, the National Research Fund in Kenya and the National Research Foundation in South Africa. In many countries, the national ministries responsible for science, technology and innovation play the role of research funding bodies. One can start working with these early adopters to develop a funding model.
