Dr. Patricia Amato, a pediatrician at Esse Health Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine at Watson Road, has been practicing for nearly 40 years. She started gardening, with her two sisters, at a local library when she was in kindergarten. Her favorite vegetables as a child were green beans, carrots, and sweet corn. She continued to garden through 8th grade and then again in medical school, because it was basically located in a cornfield! Any medical student could get a plot of land to garden on. Now, many years later, she has a garden bigger and better than ever! Gardening is a healthy activity for children and adults. The food that is harvested is free of preservatives and pesticides. Plus, when children are involved in the process of growing your own food, they are more likely to try it. Sharing the harvest is also a favorite activity of Dr. Amato’s. She always gets smiles and many words of thanks when she gives away the bounty. What an easy way to teach sharing and kindness to your children and grandchildren!
