About us
Space Surveillance and Tracking (SST) is part of the Space Situational Awareness (SSA) component of the EU Space Programme, adopted by the European Union in 2021 with the Regulation (EU) 2021/696 of the European Parliament and of the Council. This Regulation foresaw the creation of an SST Partnership composed of 15 EU Member States – Austria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Latvia, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain and Sweden. The SST Partnership and the European Union Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA) work together to develop the European SST Capability. The Partnership’s Member States have networked their assets to provide, through the SST Service Provision Portal operated by EUSPA, a set of SST services to all EU Member States, EU institutions, spacecraft owners and operators, and other public and private entities. The SST Partnership EU Member States are represented through their national designated entities: Austria (FFG), Czech Republic (MDCR), Denmark (DALO), Finland (FMI), France (CNES), Germany (German Space Agency at DLR), Greece (NOA), Italy (ASI), Latvia (IZM), the Netherlands (EZ), Poland (POLSA), Portugal (PT MoD), Romania (ROSA), Spain (AEE) and Sweden (SNSA). Funded by the European Union. This website reflects only the SST Cooperation’s actions and the European Commission and the European Health and Digital Executive Agency are not responsible for any use that may be made of the information it contains.

From 11 to 13 March, #EUSST held its 84th Steering Committee meeting in Riga, with the participation of 18 EU Member States. Dr Pascal Faucher, Chair of EU SST, deeply thanks Prof. Guntars Kitenbergs, Vice-Rector for Research at the Latvijas Universitate, as well as Kalvis Salmins and Kaspars Karolis from the Latvian delegation, for the warm welcome at the beautiful University of Latvia. Together we are shaping the future of the EU Space Surveillance and Tracking. #EUSpace EUSPA - EU Agency for the Space Programme EU Space CNES Agencia Espacial Española Agenzia Spaziale Italiana German Aerospace Center (DLR) POLSA Polska Agencja Kosmiczna | Polish Space Agency Romanian Space Agency FFG Österreichische Forschungsförderungsgesellschaft mbH Ministerstvo dopravy ČR Forsvarsministeriets Materiel- og Indkøbsstyrelse Finnish Meteorological Institute - Ilmatieteen laitos National Observatory of Athens Ministry of Education and Science of Latvia Ministerie van Economische Zaken Rymdstyrelsen European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA)

Ensuring Space Safety: The Role of EU SST As space becomes more crowded, with over 1 million pieces of man-made space debris currently orbiting Earth, the risk of collisions, fragmentations, and re-entries into the atmosphere is growing. The EU Space Surveillance and Tracking (EU SST) sub-component of the EU Space Programme helps mitigate risks, particularly for key space assets like Galileo, EGNOS, Copernicus, and GOVSATCOM satellites. How does EU SST help? EU SST tracks and surveys registered satellites, providing essential data and services to protect space assets and ensure the continuity of critical space-based applications. In the first half of 2024, EU SST reported 68 re-entry events involving at least one EU Member State. While these objects may not have reached the ground, EU SST’s data helps anticipate and manage potential risks. Space Re-entries: A Regular Occurrence Since the start of the Space Age, over 32,000 man-made objects, including 5,884 payloads, 4,279 rocket bodies, and 22,213 pieces of orbital debris, have re-entered Earth’s atmosphere. On average, one object (either a satellite payload or rocket body) re-enters every 2.5 days, and one piece of debris re-enters every 26.5 hours. Monitoring these events is crucial for safeguarding our assets in orbit. EU SST’s work is essential in ensuring the sustainability of space operations and protecting both space infrastructure and life on Earth. EU Space #EUSpace

On 18 February, the 7th meeting of the European Union Industry and Start-ups Forum on STM (EISF), co-chaired by Dr Pascal Faucher, Chair of #EUSST, and Rodolphe Muñoz, from the European Commission (DG DEFIS), took place in Brussels with over 100 participants from industry and start-ups (both online and in person). Since the last EISF meeting, EU SST has started to receive operational SST data from seven commercial data providers: 6Roads, Aldoria, ArianeGroup, Deimos Engineering and Systems, GMV Aerospace and Defence, Safran Data System and Sybilla Technologies. This was season one. At the 7th EISF meeting, Pascal announced that the next call on commercial data provision (season two) had just been published. Pascal also congratulated the 12 companies selected for the development of commercial sensors in the framework of EU SST. Grants have already been signed, or are in the process of signature with 6Roads, Aldoria, ARCA Dynamics, Astro Alliance SRL, Deimos Engineering and Systems, GMV Aerospace and Defence, Indra, Infinite Orbits, Look Up, Safran Data Systems, Sybilla Technologies and Vyoma. We are delighted to cooperate with the vibrant and dynamic ecosystem of industry and start-ups in Europe, and look forward to continue this collaboration. The meeting included insightful presentations on the upcoming calls for tenders to be published in 2025, a record-breaking total of 30 different ITTs, Thanks to all the participants, speakers, and secretariat for the fruitful discussions during the event. #EUSpace Dampier Blanco Laura Gandyra Aurélie Gillet Léa Péguillet Nastasi Jose María Hermoso Cassien Jobic Cristina Pérez Hernández Elena Vellutini Florian Delmas Florent Lacomba EUSPA - EU Agency for the Space Programme CNES Agencia Espacial Española Agenzia Spaziale Italiana German Aerospace Center (DLR) POLSA Polska Agencja Kosmiczna | Polish Space Agency Romanian Space Agency FFG Austrian Research Promotion Agency Ministerstvo dopravy ČR Forsvarsministeriets Materiel- og Indkøbsstyrelse Finnish Meteorological Institute - Ilmatieteen laitos National Observatory of Athens Ministry of Education and Science of Latvia Ministry of Economic Affairs Rymdstyrelsen European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA)
