Fighting Hunger, Feeding Hope.
About us
Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida (SHFBCF) is a member of Feeding America – the largest charitable domestic hunger-relief organization in the United States. SHFBCF secures and distributes food and grocery products to more than 625 local nonprofit feeding partners throughout Central Florida. Through the help of food and financial donors, volunteers and a caring, committed community, the food bank distributes 300,000 meals every day to a seven-county service area. Feeding neighbors facing hunger is only the beginning. By investing in job training programs, advocating for access to nutritious foods, and inspiring our community to get involved, SHFBCF is leaning into the root causes of hunger and helping our neighbors thrive. With support from the Central Florida community, Second Harvest Food Bank is feeding inspiration, change, achievement, health — and families facing hunger.

“It’s about how we can give back to the food bank, the community, and each other through our careers and other endeavors,” explains Daniel Betancourt, founding chairman of the food bank’s Young Professionals Committee. Through various initiatives, from trivia nights to professional development sessions and volunteer activities, the Young Professionals Committee engages a younger demographic and makes a positive impact for local neighbors facing hunger. Last year alone, 53 members raised funds to provide more than 72,000 meals. That’s the power of change in action. “There’s a new generation that is determined to keep helping our neighbors,” Daniel says, adding, “We’re only just getting started, that’s the most exciting part.” Learn more about the Young Professionals Committee and how you can join: https://lnkd.in/eNT6aesN. "I can help feed people, it’s fun and I tell my friends to come so they can learn how to sort the food," 11-year-old volunteer Olivia says. Olivia and her mom, Kristin, started volunteering last year and, so far, have each served more than 40 hours. They've worked in the main warehouse, sorting donations and building boxes, but Olivia has a favorite way to help. "I like the meat room because it’s cooler but I will help anywhere," she says. Kids as young as 10 can volunteer with a chaperone. Sign up for a shift today: https://lnkd.in/ekUCMUTa

“Some cafeterias are closed, some kids don’t have transportation to their school,” said Second Harvest Communications Manager Erika Spence. “They rely on community centers to access a free meal, breakfast and lunch.” Second Harvest fights summer hunger by partnering with community centers, schools, churches and more to make sure kids can focus on being kids this summer. Hands of Hope America is one of those partners. Each day, the kids play outside, they're taught emotional and social skills, they do arts and crafts, and they go on field trips. The kids can focus on all those activities because they know each day a meal is there for them. Take a look inside this incredible summer camp: https://lnkd.in/eN_uCQJD
