Filoli

Newly revealed from the Filoli Archives! This hand-sketched document was made by Willis Polk, the original architect for the Filoli House. Sketched likely in June of 1915, on the back of stationery for The Bohemian Club, of which he was a member, Polk took transverse measurements of the house in 360°, with the front door/ portico as the center. The measurements allow the builders to correctly begin construction on the house, in the exact location determined by Polk and the Bourns. The sketches were made just before or at the time of groundbreaking at the Filoli site, and show a compass pointing north, and faint sketches of possible marble work for the facade at the top of the document. There are also small notes, long-form additions and subtractions, and angle measurements for the edges of the home. This document shows the intense work that went into designing and creating Filoli, by Polk and by everyone involved in the construction.

The historic Ballroom is being renovated this summer, and the next step in the process is restoring the magnificent canvasses that were installed during the Bourn family's time at Filoli. The paintings of the Bourn's Muckross Estate was completed in 1921 by the American painter Ernest Peixotto. We want to shout out Preservation Arts for lending their hard work and expertise to this grand renovation project. We can't wait for you to see the completed Ballroom!
