New Study: rTMS More Effective Than Antidepressant Switch for Treatment-Resistant Depression 👀 We are nerds for science and data here at First Tracks! And a new groundbreaking study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry has found that repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (#TMS) may be more effective than switching antidepressants for patients with treatment-resistant depression. Data we loved to see: • rTMS resulted in a significantly larger reduction in depressive symptoms compared to medication switching • Higher response rates: 37.5% for rTMS vs 14.6% for medication switch • Higher remission rates: 27.1% for rTMS vs 4.9% for medication switch • rTMS showed larger decreases in anxiety and anhedonia symptoms This multicenter randomized controlled trial, led by Dr. Iris Dalhuisen and colleagues, compared rTMS to the next pharmacological treatment step in patients who had not responded adequately to at least two previous treatment trials. The results suggest that rTMS could be a valuable next step for patients with moderately treatment-resistant depression. Additionally, the study indicates that treatment choice may be guided by specific symptom dimensions. This research opens new avenues for personalized treatment approaches in depression. Breakthrough Study in #Nature Medicine on Treatment-Resistant Depression Care! Exciting news in mental health research! The ASCERTAIN-TRD study has just been published, comparing different strategies for Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD). The results?!? 🏆 Top Performer: rTMS Augmentation (enhancing treatment by adding repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation - a non-invasive procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate specific areas of the brain) Key findings: • rTMS augmentation showed #better results compared to switching antidepressants on clinician-rated symptoms. • It demonstrated a moderate-to-large effect size, meaning it was #significantly more effective than medication switches. • The study found that for every 7 patients treated with rTMS, 1 additional patient responded to treatment, and for every 11 patients, 1 achieved remission. These are considered #excellent outcomes in depression treatment. We just wrapped up an incredible few days at the Clinical TMS Society Annual Meeting in #London, where the energy and innovation were truly inspiring. We are so proud of all the clinics in our network that presented their published work on Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), a non-invasive procedure that offers hope to those struggling with depression, OCD, and other mental health conditions. Here are some conference highlights you won’t want to miss! The event kicked off on June 13th with a Welcome Reception at The Royal Institution, featuring a fascinating talk from Professor Anthony Barker, the Father of Electricity. On June 14th, Dr. Mark S. George shared groundbreaking methods to make TMS more efficient. This was followed by an insightful session on using rTMS to treat OCD, led by Dr. Tracy Barbour, Dr. Rebecca Price, and Dr. Carolyn Rodriguez. Top researchers also presented their latest studies on TMS and depression treatments. The day ended with the Annual Gala Dinner, celebrating the community's achievements. June 15th featured Dr. Daniel Ciampi discussing how magnetic stimulation can help with chronic pain, Dr. Andrew Leuchter on using EEG to enhance TMS treatments for depression, and Dr. Colleen Hanlon on innovative TMS applications for addiction treatment. The day concluded with an "Ask the Experts" panel and a fun raffle. Throughout the event, First Tracks had a booth next to our friends at BrainsWay and shared a booth with Empathy MindED.
