About us
Headed by Marco, one of the grandchildren of Pier Luigi Nervi, the Foundation has been engaged in coordinating the scientific research and financial support that allowed the birth and development of the international traveling exhibition “Pier Luigi Nervi Architecture as Challenge“. In addition to this exhibition, the Foundation has been engaged in the recovery of Nervi’s writings, enabling among other things the new edition of the Norton Lectures given by Pier Luigi Nervi at Harvard University in 1962. Other fields of focus for our Foundation are educational activities: besides past research projects like the NerViLab, an important result of our work in this field has been the contest elaborated for the Italian Ministry of Education Pier Luigi Nervi: Costruire correttamente, which addressed itself to all grades in Primary and Secondary School. More recently, our organisation has entered a partnership with the Politecnico di Milano, Lecco Campus, where we recently inaugurated the Laboratorio Nervi. The Laboratorio Nervi is also the setting for the activities of the EU-funded REcube Project, which our Foundation is currently developing together with 12 European academic and scientific partners. The Fondation PLN Project is also committed to the conservation and rehabilitation of structures by Nervi, not only in Italy but also on an international level, with the hope of contributing to a scientific awareness and protection of Modernity's architectural heritage, of which the structures by Nervi remain among its highest expressions. Within this framework, our Foundation participated in the creation of the Conservation Plan of the Stadio Flaminio in Rome, funded by the Keeping it Modern initiative, and is currently involved in the development of the Conservation Plan for the two halls designed and built by Pier Luigi Nervi in the Torino Esposizioni complex, also funded by the Getty Keeping it Modern initiative.

✨ Programme set for CONCRETO Academy’s Master Your Skills ✨ 📚 Master Your Skills is the first face-to-face activity of the annual CONCRETO Teaching & Training Programme and will take place in the Spanish capital from 3-12 April. 🌍 It groups 30 CONCRETO ACADEMY Students from Italy, Spain and Türkiye. Through case studies, lab and field applications, students learn about deterioration mechanisms, assessment techniques and repair strategies with a focus on retrofitting techniques. 👨🎓 Participants learn through an apprenticeship model that fosters active skill-building and knowledge exchange. 🏗️ 🛠 📐 At the start of the programme, the students are assigned into groups and given a case study. “How to RETROFIT a concrete structure to respond to current codes without altering the original Architectural Intent & Fabric” Over the course of the programme, they work together, consult with experts, and speak to Professors. At the end of the course, they present their solution. 🔨 🏛️ 👩🏫👨🏫 Students also participate in several technical field trips, including company visits. These include a visit to the HOLCIM Technology and Cement Innovation Center at Holcim España, to GRUPO PUMA, and to our technical partner Sika. In addition, participants will visit the Instituto de Ciencias de la Construcción Eduardo Torroja, the Hipódromo de Zarzuela and the Torroja Museum. Narrazione di una rinascita Torino Esposizioni Un progetto di narrazione fotografica della rinascita di una delle più suggestive icone dell’architettura contemporanea internazionale del Novecento. Un’occasione per realizzare un documento visivo unico: una testimonianza della poesia del segno di Pier Luigi Nervi. Un ingegnere visionario che possedeva così profondamente la tecnica costruttiva da modellare forme, volumi, vuoti e leggerezza da esprimere un lirismo architettonico commovente. Questo progetto è reso possibile dalla Fondazione Pier Luigi Nervi Project, SCR Piemonte e dalla Cobar Spa. Le riprese fotografiche sono relative a un sito di proprietà della Città di Torino per cui SCR Piemonte SpA svolge il ruolo di Stazione Appaltante per il relativo cantiere Sessione di riprese 17.02.2024 Torino Esposizioni, complesso di proprietà pubblica, diventerà un hub culturale dalle molte funzioni. Ospiterà, la nuova Biblioteca Civica della città, e un Teatro Nuovo rinnovato. Torino Esposizioni è un complesso esteso avviato a fine anni trenta del Novecento con Ettore Sottsass senior. Il dopoguerra porta la Fiat e Pier Luigi Nervi, che progetta e realizza con la sua impresa le parti più iconiche: i padiglioni 2 e 3. Si tratta per Pier Luigi Nervi di un progetto nodale in cui sperimenta per la prima volta ciò che diventerà il “sistema Nervi”, famoso e celebrato in tutto il mondo. Nel 2017 il raggruppamento guidato da ICIS con, tra gli altri, Rafael Moneo e Isolarchitetti, vince il concorso internazionale che, bandito da SCR, porta al primo Studio per il recupero e riuso del Comprensorio di Torino Esposizioni. Abbonati ora su https://lnkd.in/gC4ZvYH7 861: Cemento on stage È un momento magico per il cemento: ovunque si celebrano i suoi successi con mostre, libri, trasmissioni e podcast. Il sessantesimo anniversario dell’Autostrada del Sole, il 4 ottobre, questa volta non è passato inosservato. A inizio dicembre, due mostre a Roma ne hanno raccontato la storia: una monografica curata dall’Istituto Luce alla Galleria Nazionale di Arte Moderna, valorizzando materiali video, e una al MAXXI, dedicata alle autostrade italiane, con un focus speciale sull’Autosole e il plastico dell’intero tracciato Milano-Napoli, dagli archivi della Società Autostrade. Anche noi abbiamo dedicato la copertina al ponte Giuseppe Romita, l’ultimo costruito in quell’incredibile avventura durata otto anni, progettato da Silvano Zorzi, uno degli eroi della Scuola italiana di Ingegneria. Romita fu il ministro che, nel 1955, firmò il piano pluriennale delle autostrade, dando priorità assoluta all’Autosole, vista come la strada dell’unità nazionale. Al MAXXI, a fine ottobre, si è aperta una mostra sulla Torre Velasca, uno dei più importanti grattacieli Italian Style, il cui restauro abbiamo trattato nel numero 859 della rivista. Qui il cemento armato, esibito espressivamente, definisce il linguaggio architettonico. Per la mostra è stato realizzato un esperimento di inclusione: modelli tattili aiutano a comprendere il comportamento strutturale della torre, spiegando il complesso gioco di forze tra i puntoni che sostengono l’espansione e i solai del 15° e 18° piano. Progettati con il gruppo MAXXIpertutti e tiflologhe esperte, questi modelli interattivi aiutano non solo le persone con disabilità visive, ma anche il grande pubblico spesso intimorito dalla complessità dell’ingegneria. L’inaugurazione è stata accompagnata da una puntata di Wikiradio su Rai Radio Tre, da anni attenta ai temi dell’ingegneria strutturale. Anche in Svizzera il cemento è protagonista di mostre: all’ETH di Zurigo sui gusci di Heinz Isler e sugli hypar di Felix Candela. E si pubblicano nuovi libri: una monografia su Pier Luigi Nervi di Gabriele Neri (Hoepli), uno sulla diga del Sabbione di Claudio Marcello, e uno sulla sperimentazione di Isler, nato dal dottorato di Giulia Boller (Verlag). Sempre più spesso, poi, il cemento viene scelto per spazi dedicati a festival ed eventi culturali, come mostra il nostro inserto sulle “Strutture Pop-up”. Insomma, dopo anni difficili tra incomprensioni e fake news, tutti ricominciano ad amare il cemento!

🌟 CONCRETO Stepping Stone 2025 – a great success! 🌟 🧩 We enjoyed three packed days, filled with interesting case studies and research projects covering the restoration and rehabilitation of reinforced concrete structures. 🎓 Our students learned from the best in the field. 🏗️ 💪 Learning by doing! Starting with a history of concrete technology and an overview of Pier Luigi Nervi’s work, we moved to concrete conservation and rehabilitation projects, ending with looking at sustainability and ways to make this material more sustainable and how to better "retrofit" our concrete structures. The session on the morning of 31 January was organised in conjunction with the Italian Foundation of Engineers. 💕 We extend a heartfelt thank you 🙏 to all of our speakers, to our partners, to our sponsors, to our students, and to the whole CONCRETO ACADEMY team!
