Hunger Doesn't Have To Happen

About us

Feeding people facing hunger today and solving hunger for tomorrow. Every year, nearly 40% of our country's food ends up in landfills while millions of people go hungry. Food Lifeline rescues and redistributes healthy, nutritious food to people in need. We receive millions of pounds of surplus food from farmers, manufacturers, grocery stores, restaurants, and retailers every year. Our Hunger Solution Center, completed in 2016, has 190,000 square feet of space to hold this rescued food before volunteers sort and repack it. Food Lifeline then delivers it to more than 350 food banks, shelters, and meal programs throughout Western Washington - providing 280,000 meals every to our most vulnerable community members. At the same time, we are working to solve hunger for future by advocating for change and partnering with other organizations and agencies dedicated to ending hunger. The Hunger Solution Center is a hub for innovation and partnership that allows our community to join the movement to end hunger. We convene people at all levels to mobilize efforts that address hunger and other measures of poverty. It is easy and effective to donate your food, funds, voice, or time towards ending hunger. Visit FoodLifeline.org and find out how you can get involved.

Thank you for joining us and hunger advocates across the country this September for Hunger Action Month! Our Hunger Action Month Advocacy Page was one of our most visited web pages during September. We also raised $65,000 to support our mission, thanks to all of you and a $25,000 match from Gesa Credit Union, plus their food drive donation of 540 pounds of food. We're grateful to everyone single person who advocated, donated, volunteered, and spread the word to help end hunger in our communities. Your support comes at a critical time, as new report from the USDA reveals that 13.5 percent of U.S. households (or about 1 in 7) were food insecure during 2023, marking the highest rate of food insecurity in a decade. The momentum we built together during September will help us advance policies on election day that ensure all our neighbors have the food they need to thrive. 🗳️ Read more about how to vote to end hunger in the upcoming election below, or on our Advocacy Page: https://lnkd.in/gd-Ab8Yf Vote to end hunger on Election Day! 📣 1. Maintain Washington’s Climate Commitment Act by voting No on Initiative 2117. Food Lifeline is endorsing No on 2117, the campaign to defeat Initiative 2117 which seeks to repeal the Climate Commitment Act on Election Day. If the Act is repealed, it would eliminate efforts and funding available for transportation and climate measures, including the newly created Washington Commodity Donation Program. 2. Maintain the State Capital Gains Tax by voting No on Initiative 2109. Washington’s current capital gains tax helps rebalance the state’s regressive tax code, while providing more revenue for community investments. Families experiencing food insecurity benefit from these investments, including expanded affordable childcare and early education, special education, technical and community colleges, and repairing and replacing schools. Food Lifeline is endorsing No on 2109, the campaign to defeat Initiative 2109 on Election Day. #EndHunger #HungerActionMonth #JoinOurMovement #NoOn2117 #No2109 #FoodLifeline

Fogo de Chão opened its first Seattle restaurant last month and we were honored to be part of it! They donated a portion of their opening week sales—$13,997.30!—to Food Lifeline, and presented the donation at their opening party. These funds will provide vital support for our mission to end hunger in Western Washington, helping thousands of families across our region. Fogo de Chao is committed to feeding their communities with respect, transparency, and generosity of spirit. They work to reduce food insecurity by partnering with local food banks, and we're looking forward to growing the partnership.

BTW, we have a new website! We created this new site to better support our mission, our partners, our volunteers, our supporters, and our clients. It more fully represents the breadth of the work we are doing in collaboration with others to end hunger in Western Washington—and makes it easier for everyone to access the information that they need. Specific goals of the new site included: -Accessibility. -Streamlined design with clear, clean navigation. -Powerful storytelling, incorporating more visuals. -More content to convey ALL the important work Food Lifeline is engaged in to end hunger. -Highlighted calls to action. -Providing background and learnings about the root causes of hunger, specifically poverty, racial inequity, and social injustice. -Connections for Food Lifeline audiences to the specific, valuable information and resources they need, along with actionable next steps. We are engaged in many areas as we work to end hunger, and this new site highlights information and stories on all of this work. Huge thanks to everyone who helped bring this project to fruition, and to our incredible design team, New Media Campaigns. Explore the new site and let us know what you think! www.foodlifeline.org

Only two days left to vote Team Husky or Team Cougar! For the #BoeingAppleCup this Saturday, WSU and UW are competing to raise funds for their campus food pantries! In the leadup to the big game, these rivals are coming together to tackle college hunger. Every donation counts as a gift, and all funds support the WSU Campus Food Pantry and the UW Food Pantry. Vote/Donate for your team - now until the 14th! Cougs - https://lnkd.in/gBHGymBu Huskies - https://lnkd.in/g5tQefpK College hunger is a far too common experience on college campuses where the costs of tuition, housing, books, and groceries intersect, and nearly 40% of students don’t get enough to eat. University food pantries provide essential support to students in need, helping them stay focused on their studies.
