Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research reposted this
Laboratory Director, Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research President, Leidos Biomedical Research
At the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research one of our objectives is to attract the next generation of life scientists for engaging research experiences. We just hosted for summer internships a large and enthusiastic group of high school, undergraduate, and graduate students. Their capstone was a poster session where they presented their work with mentors from laboratories at the National Cancer Institute and Frederick National Laboratory. There were 47 poster presentations. This popular event held on the Fort Detrick campus of the Frederick National Laboratory showcased a broad array of topics. This reflected the breadth of science explored by these teams. I attended this event since my laboratory (the Molecular Pharmacology Program) hosted three summer interns, as shown below. The left panel shows our high school intern, Sophia Yang. She was co-mentored by Dr. Xi (Hill) Liu, Senior Principal Scientist (on the left) and Dr. Samuel Okpechi, one of our post-doctoral fellows. The middle panel displays on the right our undergraduate intern, Nicholas Bray, who studies engineering at Michigan State University. He was mentored by another one of our post-doctoral fellows, Dr. Yair Alfaro, who stands on the left. In the right panel is our graduate student intern, Nimod Janson, who appears on the right. He is completing PhD studies at Purdue University and was co-mentored by Dr. Liu and Dr. Okpechi, who stands next to him. This was an exciting gathering for interns to share their latest findings with our scientific community.

Clinical data on the efficacy of #COVID19 vaccines and their capacity to induce and sustain an effective serological response in immunocompromised populations, such as individuals with cancer, is relatively scarce. 1984 may be solidified in the collective conscious as a memorable year thanks to George Orwell's book, but for us it was a pivotal year in our history of #HIVResearch. 40 years ago, a team working at what would one day become the Frederick National Laboratory met the critical need for viral production in research efforts that led to the first successful HIV blood test--a vital tool in reducing transmission via transfusions. Julian Bess Jr., head of our Biological Products Core in our #AIDS and Cancer Virus Program, remembers this high risk, high reward work as the team completed 80 lots from 6,820 liters of cell culture by the end of the year, an average of one 85-liter lot every two workdays.
Four decades ago, Frederick made it possible to implement the first blood test for HIV | Frederick National Laboratory
