🚨 Between 2017 and 2020, over 400,000 Ethiopian migrants from the #HornOfAfrica have taken dangerous, irregular routes across the Gulf of Aden, seeking better opportunities in the Arabian Peninsula. This week, Free the Slaves’ Senior Program Manager for Research, Dr. Marta Furlan, presented critical findings at a roundtable in Addis Ababa, co-hosted with the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission and the African Migration Policy Center at Friedrich Ebert Stiftung. Smugglers and traffickers are expanding their networks, particularly in war-torn #Yemen, with state collusion heightening the risks and leaving migrants more vulnerable than ever. Key recommendations: ✅ Address the root causes driving migration: economic need, climate change, and conflict. ✅ Establish more accessible legal migration pathways. ✅ Strengthen collaboration between countries of origin, transit, and destination. ✅ Promote region-to-region cooperation to protect migrants. 🔗 Access our full report on Horn of Africa migration here: https://lnkd.in/gbwbY8Ye

Together we can end the conditions that allow modern slavery to exist.
About us
Free the Slaves is an anti-slavery organization based in Washington, D.C. We change the conditions that allow modern slavery to exist. We help communities chart their own path toward sustainable freedom based on their unique needs and circumstances. We strengthen the capacity of grassroots organizations, government agencies, advocacy coalitions, and the media to take action. We support vulnerable communities through education, mobilization, and increasing access to education, vocational training, and essential services. We help liberate those in slavery and help them rejoin their families and communities. We record and share success stories so the world can see what both slavery and freedom look like. And we systematically assess our work to ensure accountability and continuously improve our programs.

🌍 Strengthening the Fight Against Modern Slavery Across Asia Free the Slaves recently participated in key regional events to advance anti-slavery efforts in Asia. At the ARAT Conference in Bali, we presented research on how climate change exacerbates vulnerability to human trafficking in the Philippines. In Kathmandu, at ECPAT's workshop, we focused on innovative approaches to protecting children from exploitation in South Asia. Ella Baker spoke the words "We who believe in freedom cannot rest until it comes". Baker was a tireless advocate for grassroots organizing. Her quote is a call to action, a reminder that the struggle for freedom and justice is ongoing and requires unwavering dedication. At Free the Slaves, these words resonate deeply with our mission. Since 2000, we've been committed to ending modern slavery and dismantling the conditions that allow exploitation to persist. Just as Ella Baker fought for civil rights and human dignity, we strive to create a world where every person is free. Together, with a belief in freedom and justice, we can turn this vision into reality. #EndModernSlavery

At Free the Slaves, we are deeply committed to empowering survivors of modern slavery to lead the fight against exploitation. Our recent 3-day training with the members of Azad Shakti Abhiyan in India is a testament to this mission. The training covered essential topics such as the global realities of modern slavery, national and international laws, human rights, and community mobilization strategies. Survivors gained valuable insights into the various forms of slavery worldwide and left with the knowledge to engage and mobilize vulnerable communities effectively. As Ms. Durga Devi, a participant, shared, “When I was working as a bonded laborer, I wasn’t aware that my employer couldn’t make me work more than 8 hours. Now that I am learning all these things, I want to help others and save them from these conditions.” Read more about how this training is turning survivors into community leaders, driving change from within. Together, we are building a world where slavery is a thing of the past. 💪 🔗 https://lnkd.in/g9fmVzi2 #EndModernSlavery #SurvivorLeadership

Episode 13: Moving Freedom Forward—Challenges and Opportunities in the Global Movement to Abolish Slavery 🎙️ In this keynote from the North American Freedom From Slavery Forum, historian and abolitionist Dr. Timothy Patrick McCarthy explores the power of grassroots movements in the fight against slavery. He emphasizes how technology has long played a crucial role in amplifying these efforts but reminds us that technology should be seen as a tool—not the solution. At the heart of every movement are people, and Dr. McCarthy highlights the importance of keeping human dignity and inclusion at the forefront as we harness digital tools to drive real change. 🎧 Listen to Episode 13 of Conversations on Modern Slavery 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gzJiwcMu
