German autonomous electric vehicle shuttle manufacturer Holon is set to launch construction soon on a $100 million manufacturing facility in Jacksonville, Florida. HOLON CEO Dr. Henning von Watzdorf announced that the plant will initially produce 5,000 autonomous EVs annually, with plans to scale up production to a maximum of 12,000 units per year in two shifts. Manufacturing operations are expected to kick off in 2026. “Our vehicles provide exceptional safety and comfort for up to 15 passengers and can seamlessly integrate into traffic with a top speed of nearly 40 miles per hour,” von Watzdorf remarked. Jacksonville is actively positioning itself as a national leader in the autonomous vehicle sector, spearheaded by its initiative known as the Ultimate Urban Circulator (U2C). This exciting development was brought to us by Bill Bortzfield of EV Rider. FSEC® Florida Solar Energy Center reposted this
Excited to see the work from Argonne National Laboratory and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory featured in this The New York Times article. Ground-mounted solar energy has tremendous potential for dual uses, so the pairing of #Solar + #Habitat may seem to be a no-brainer in many situations. But we have also realized nuances and learned some lessons in just the few years that this practice has been implemented. This article does a good job covering the majority of those aspects - from the potential upsides to the challenges. Perspective is important, and one paragraph in particular jumped out to me: "In measuring ecological value, the starting point is fundamental, scientists say. Replacing a field of row crops with solar panels and clover would provide a net benefit for pollinators, even without a mix of native species. On the other hand, no amount of high-quality seeding will match the ecological value of an intact ecosystem, especially in places where solar panels would require the removal of trees or shrubs." It's easy to get caught comparing (and maybe even judging) the perceived ecological compatibility of #PV sites based simply on how tall the panels are and what vegetation is growing onsite. But those comparisons usually fail to consider all the site-specific variables that go into solar siting, design, and maintenance. Instead, let's first and foremost look at these sites from the lens of the mitigation hierarchy and in the context of NNL / BNG goals. That tells me that if properly sited, even PV sites paired with lower value clover-dominated seed mixes can still lead to biodiversity net gains. And that is something to be excited about.
