How do you lead innovation and chart new paths for your league? When Jessica Berman, Commissioner of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL), was in town for the North Carolina Courage v San Diego Wave Fútbol Club match, we captured this 2 minute video on how and why behind empowering your teammates. Jess and I clicked in 2018, when our friend Angela Ruggiero (4X Olympian, Tech disruptor, champion of equity and keynote speaker) introduced us. Since then, I’ve seen Jess apply her leadership superpowers of recruiting the best people to join her in challenging times to drive growth and innovation, of integrity and courage, and drawing on her deep experience working with sports leagues from the lacrosse league to the NBA. Under her leadership, ⚽ the NWSL exec team has expanded to include all stars from Bain, McKinsey, Nike, NFL, DreamWorks, MLS, NBA and more. ⚽ franchise valuations skyrocketed - most recently Willow Bay and Bob Iger purchased Angel City Football Club for $250M, making ⚽ 26 NWSL players were represented in the 2024 Olympic Women’s Soccer Championship Match ⚽ sports is one of the most powerful platforms for positive societal change and the league is capturing that momentum to drive conversation ⚽ negotiated innovative collective bargaining agreement that’s a win-win for the league and the players, ensuring continuous growth ⚽ brokered a landmark four-year domestic rights deal (then the largest ever media deal for a women’s sports league) with CBS Sports, ESPN, Prime Video and Scripps/ION to feed the fans growing consumption of their beloved sport And NWSL only just getting started! The Commish is in the house! So great to welcome my friend Jessica Berman, Commisdioner of National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) to Duke University! One of the most innovative and courageous leaders, Jess was honored as Sports Business Journal’s 2024 Executive of the Year. She shared her insights on sports business and leadership with our students whose questions included ones on the rationale behind the unprecedented collective bargaining agreement she just brokered to her path to becoming commissioner. Here are some takeaways from the session: ⚽ Dream Big: Stay prepared, Be prepared. You never really know when the “right” opportunity will be presented to you. ⚽ Know enough to ask questions and know enough to ask about what you don’t know (when you need help) ⚽ What you don’t measure won’t matter ⚽ Representation matters ⚽ Be open to learning. Ask questions, spend time with people, invest in people. I was incredibly proud this week to receive the Disruptor Award at Look Good Feel Better’s annual DreamBall gala and share the stage with Michelle DeMartini Wlazlo, who received the Retail Champion Award, and Kate Zickel, who received the Survivor Advocate Award. For those not familiar with the organization, Look Good Feel Better provides free beauty services, lessons and products to people undergoing cancer treatment to teach them how to manage the appearance-related side effects. This theme of disruption is particularly meaningful to me; e.l.f. was created 20 years ago selling cosmetics over the internet for $1. Everyone thought the founders were crazy. While we’ve expanded price points and distribution channels, that disruptor gene is very much part of our DNA.   We think of disruption as democratizing access across all pillars of business. We have democratized access to premium quality products for our community by making the best of beauty accessible for every eye, lip and face. We’ve democratized access with equity for every member of our team. We are democratizing access to corporate boards, and we’ve democratized access by engaging and entertaining our community.   Look Good Feel Better is also a disruptor. We all know someone affected by cancer, and beauty can play an important role in helping patients maintain their dignity and pride during such a challenging time, while also providing moments of joy and levity.   I share this award with all of us especially our E.L.F. BEAUTY team and partners who are bold disruptors with kind hearts.   Thank you to Louanne Roark and the entire DreamBall team for this great honor.

It was so so special last Friday, at the start of Duke’s 100 year Founder’s Day Celebration, to moderate a panel of 3 amazing leaders and Dukies- Coach K, Charles Randolph-Wright (renowned playwright, director, actor), and major general Michelle Donahue on lessons in leadership. Insights surfaced from - the importance of caring for our people, frameworks for resilience, to the power of curiosity, and many more gems. My amazing teammate and renowned leadership professor Sim Sitkin closed out the program with key insights on learning, failure and seeing control as scaffolding rather than a cage. The program is part of a pilot program between the Fuqua/Coach K Center on Leadership and Ethics (COLE) and Duke Lifelong Learning. Throughout the morning, we heard from phenomenal scholars and leaders across Duke- from innovation to public policy to divinity. The audience made it special too! I loved seeing friends and so many leaders from different expertise and perspectives representing law, medicine, business and the public sector, engaging in deep exchange of ideas and stories. My heart is full and so so proud of what we co-created. Inspiring today to spend time at Duke exploring Lessons in Leadership hosted by the incredible Sanyin Siang ‘96 with key plenary speakers Charles Randolph-White ‘78, Coach K, and General Michelle Donahue ‘96. First, shoutout that my Duke Class of 1996 is leading the way! Second, inspiration ignited by these leaders who ALL pointed to caring for your people as a central role of the leader. As General Donahue said, she wakes up each day for her morning run and focuses her thinking on one question: “who can I help today?” Third, in our breakout sessions and summary session it was fantastic to be vulnerable, ask questions, and learn from the amazing leaders in the room. Loved attending with my wingwoman Heather Hu. And great to see Winston Henderson, Donna Claycomb Sokol, Jennifer Chambers too! And soon I’ll be adding to my network with all of the new connections made.
