We were so thrilled to host the Colorado Community College System's retreat earlier this month along with our partners from the Keystone Policy Center. Thanks to the system's board chair Landon Mascareñaz for the context about this productive convening, where we saw bold leadership and a shared commitment to economic mobility for all Coloradans on clear display. We're excited about the future for CCCS and the many Colorado kids and families it serves!
An inspiring two days with the Colorado Community College System building our strategic plan with board members, staff, presidents, philanthropic partners, and champion legislators. Thanks to Keystone Policy Center for showing the power of co-creation at a statewide scale to sustain an open future for all Colorado kids. Thanks to Gary Community Ventures for hosting us in such an innovative space and thanks to Bailee Harris and Dr. Mordecai Brownlee for the pics! We are almost there folks...our 2030 plan is coming soon and we can't wait to share with everyone!

“Imagine that you can go online, answer a few basic questions about yourself and your family. And in 6 minutes, you get a customized report that tells you about the benefits you’re eligible to receive. Often, those benefits add up to $2,500 a month. That’s phenomenal and life changing for a family.” Those were the words of our CEO Santhosh Ramdoss in announcing the new partnership with the City and County of Denver to help our MyFriendBen tool reach and serve more Denver residents. Thanks so much to Mayor Mike Johnston, Dana Niemela, MSW, Anne-Marie Braga, MSSW, Adriana Lopez and Gordon Loui for their partnership in this work work. Our founder, Sam Gary, left us with a clear mandate: By 2035, transfer all of Gary Community Ventures’ assets to our community’s balance sheet. Sam’s guiding vision has informed our fierce pursuit of reimagining wealth and ownership, creating an economy where every Coloradan has the right not just to opportunity, not just to choice, but to actual ownership. Last week at #ASSEMBLE100, an annual event that convenes 100 of the most daring, innovative minds in the country around a single issue, we were surrounded by 100 brilliant investors, entrepreneurs and thought-leaders who shared this assertion. By shifting who owns assets, we not only shift who benefits from wealth and power in our country, we advance economic justice for families and individuals whose path to wealth has been intentionally and systemically obstructed. In shared conviction alongside the partners who attended the #ASSEMBLE100 Ownership-Lens Investing summit with us, we believe that the ownership economy is here. It's time to transform the future of wealth and ownership in this country, a movement that will require conviction, disruption and an unwavering commitment to equity. Thanks to our planning partners, Ida Rademacher and Joanna Smith-Ramani of The Aspen Institute as well as Devin Murphy and Atharva S. of The Bridgespan Group — we could not have done this without you. Thanks to our friends who set the table for a powerful two day conversation, Margot Brandenburg, Smitha Das and Amy Brakeman – you have laid the groundwork. And incredible gratitude is also due to the speakers who brought their perspectives to the stage: Colorado Treasurer Dave Young, Aron Szapiro, Hope Wollensack, Jenna Louie, Donna Sims Wilson, Ashley D. Bell, Lauren Sercu, CFA , Brian Svendahl, CFA, Philip Reeves, Delilah Rothenberg Professor Joseph Blasi, Brian Boland, Tracy Hadden Loh, Brian Murray, Catherine Toner, Jill Hawley, Santhosh Ramdoss, Mowa Haile, Francisco Peralta, Douglas Dell, Aisha T. It was such an honor to see our very own Reilly Pharo Carter, Steffanie Clothier and Zach Martinez honored by the Colorado Children's Campaign this week for working with a broad coalition to pass the Family Affordability Tax Credit through House Bill 24-1311. It was such an incredible room full of advocates, partners and old friends like The Women's Foundation of Colorado, The Bell Policy Center, Colorado Fiscal Institute and many more who were fellow supporters of this effort and longtime champions for Colorado kids and families. And yet, we know the work to activate this new tax credit has only just begun. In the coming days, weeks and months, we're excited to share more about the importance of getting all Colorado families to file their taxes in 2025 to take advantage the Family Affordability Tax Credit, along with the Child Tax Credit and Earned Income Tax credit. If we're able to fully execute on that work — and we fully expect to do so — we can help Colorado cut child poverty in half and make our state the best place to raise a family in the country.

What if we could de-silo our mental health services and design a coordinated system that meets the needs of our youth and families before they fall into crisis? That's the opportunity that lies ahead for the state of Colorado after it was chosen to partner with the Forum for Youth Investment (FYI) on its BEST Youth Initiative. A huge round of thanks is owed to the large team that helped Colorado win this award, including the Colorado Department of Human Services, Colorado Department of Education and Colorado Department of Labor and Employment, all of whom will now lean into this partnership with FYI to explore ways their respective agencies can collaborate and better integrate their systems and practices moving forward. A special thanks is also due to the philanthropic community that came alongside our state agencies to help them seize this opportunity, including our own Sara N., Stephanie Perez-Carrillo with Caring For Colorado Foundation, Ana Soler with Gates Family Foundation, Madeleine Ashour with Colorado Children's Campaign.

When the Dearfield Fund For Black Wealth team met Myria, she told them about how she moved from her parents’ table directly to her husband’s table. Now, after divorcing at 60 and surviving cancer, she's finally at her own table. Special thanks is due to Mary Gerlach, Aisha T. Weeks, MPA, Tiffany Roan, MPA and Steve Gui for capturing Myria's moving story, and for their tireless work supporting more than 190 first-time Black and African American homebuyers who've purchased homes in partnership with the Dearfield team. Last month, the first round of Proposition 123 equity funds were issued for affordable housing developments across Colorado. In total, these funds will create 628 units of desperately needed affordable housing for Coloradans. The largest single recipient in this round of funding was the Ballfield at Auraria development near the Metropolitan State University of Denver. The funds will help pay for 340 units reserved for tenants making between 60% and 120% of the area median income. This is a great start towards honoring the will of Coloradans, who two years ago voted to pass Proposition 123. Our team at Gary was proud to lead that campaign effort, and acknowledge that it’s just the beginning of work that needs to be done to address our state’s affordable housing crisis. A huge congratulations is due to the Colorado Housing and Finance Authority and Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade for creating this first-of-its-kind program. And a special thanks to our own Zach Martinez, Rebecca Peterson, PMP, Santhosh Ramdoss, Catherine Toner and many others for their continued work in ensuring Prop 123 is successfully implemented.

Want to improve the social safety net? Start by listening. So says our own Jess A., who listens to Coloradans every week to get their feedback on MyFriendBen, an online benefits and tax credit estimator screening tool that in six minutes with 90% accuracy, tells you what benefits you’re eligible for and how much you might receive. This helps families prioritize which benefits program they apply for based on their unique needs. In these phone calls MFB users, Jess hears comments like: “I don’t know who to call to get through to help me with my application.” “I was able to get emergency food stamps, but since I am homeless it’s harder to track my redetermination without an address or reliable internet access.” “I’m looking for benefits while I’m in this transitional place in life and I didn’t know where to start.” These fears, anxieties and struggles are both understandable and solvable, in Jess’ eyes. And she’s the perfect person to come alongside Colorado families as they work through these issues, because she's walked this path herself. Jess once qualified for public benefits, including programs like Colorado's Electronic Benefit Transfer program (EBT). She's now 10 years removed from using an EBT card to buy food for her family. Not only that, she’s achieved a level of stability that has allowed her to increase her financial literacy and build generational wealth. Now, she's determined to help others do the same. And for Jess, that process will always start with listening. As with any Gary project, Jess isn’t in this work alone. She’s partnering with teammates like Elise Henson, Brian Hiatt, Sydney Devine, Ivonne Hernandez, Rebecca Peterson, PMP, Kathleen Bottagaro, Caleb Peña, Mary Gerlach, Gustavo Baylon, Antonio Huerta and Rodney Bautista — as well as national leaders like PolicyEngine and Code the Dream. And they’re just getting started. Read more about Jess’ invaluable experiences and her approach to this work in our latest Perspectives piece: https://lnkd.in/gZU95--v
