Creating beautiful spaces for people means connecting them to light and air and materials made of wood, earth and stone. It assumes a respect for the beauty of the natural environment. The perfect building, in GBD terms, is one that produces more energy than it consumes, and consumes more waste than it produces. GBD was an early adopter of green building rating systems such as LEED, and continues to be one of the nation’s leaders in sustainable planning, design and development.

Huge news in Oregon City! The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde have reached a major milestone with the approval of the tumwata village master plan. This 23-acre site at Willamette Falls in Oregon City holds deep cultural and historical significance, and this approval marks a big step toward its restoration and revitalization. Winterbrook Planning is honored to have played a role in guiding the plan through the land use process—working closely with GBD Architects and Walker Macy, alongside City of Oregon City staff and the community. The plan received unanimous approval from the City’s Planning Commission, laying the groundwork for future ecological restoration, cultural preservation, and sustainable growth. We learned this week about the passing of one of GBD's founding principals, Chuck Gordon. Chuck was with GBD Architects from the very beginning--even before GBD, when it was Rudat Boutwell & Partners located on the 3rd floor of a knitting mill in downtown Portland. During that time Chuck and others invested their time and money for the betterment of the fledgling firm with the hope that it become a viable business. Some of his more notable projects are the Portland State Office Building, the Pacific First Federal Building, the Freightliner Headquarters, and the 200 Market Street Office Tower, an early modernist icon of the Portland skyline that paved the way for other modernist office towers to follow. But Chuck was so much more than an Architect, he also guided the firm's cultural ethos, informing many of the practices and traditions that GBD practices even today. It has been a somber and sobering week for our team as we remember Chuck's incredible life, but are comforted by the fact that he is with us every day in the strong foundations that he laid for GBD. Thank you, Chuck! 💖

Several architecture firms host students, and today we shout out GBD Architects which just finished its eighth year partnering with us. This year we were delighted to add human resource management to our industry list as well through a partnership with GNSA. Along with 85 other dedicated partners, these companies are helping us give our students a full year of meaningful professional experience prior to high school graduation.
