Kudos to Detroit Future City, a Global Epicenter of Mobility (GEM) partner, for hosting an impactful 2024 Equity Summit! The event delivered rich insights—from strategies for workforce inclusion to a strong equity framework for Detroit’s economy. The keynote by Jelani Cobb, Ph.D. was a highlight, emphasizing how understanding the history of deliberate inequality shines a light on why equity matters. He referenced When Affirmative Action Was White, a crucial read for anyone wanting to understand how policies were built to intentionally advantage some while disadvantaging others. My main takeaway? We can’t achieve equality without first addressing equity. A system built to favor some won’t self-correct—it needs to be reimagined with equity at the center. But let’s be clear: equity isn’t about replacing one group’s advantage with another’s. GEM EVP Christine Roeder was honored to discuss American competitiveness in mobility with fellow co-recipient of the #BBBRC from the South Kansas mobility coalition Debra Franklin. Moderated by Jeannine Gant, the chat focused on how #EDA funding has accelerated cluster based economic development strategies in these regions and strategies for driving sustainable innovation, inclusion, and smart manufacturing in mobility. October marks National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), and this year’s theme, "Advancing Access to Good Jobs for All," emphasizes the critical importance of ensuring people with disabilities have access to meaningful employment opportunities. We believe an inclusive economy is essential for advancing mobility in our region. This means ensuring that people with disabilities are considered, valued and empowered with good jobs that offer growth and security. Creating pathways to these opportunities is key to driving equity and expanding access for all. With the Battery Show in town, Bernard Swiecki is sharing insights on battery technology and data from GEM’s recent Future Mobility Technology Study. 🚗🔋 Our research shows that the #DetroitRegion is positioned for a major battery boom, with Michigan’s production capacity expected to grow more than 11x by 2030. As battery technology advances, the local supply chain is set to flourish, and mobility will extend beyond automotive to include aerospace, maritime and off-highway applications. The #DetroitRegion's mobility landscape is advancing rapidly. General Motors and Piston Automotive are launching a hydrogen fuel-cell facility in Detroit, shifting beyond conventional automotive tech.
