In its ninth year, Kresge’s summer internship program welcomed the 2024 cohort of eight interns this June and July. These students have been embedded within departments for approximately 10 weeks and have worked closely with foundation staff to gain a fuller picture of what it is like to work in philanthropy as a grantmaker or an operational team member. As the interns, who range from high school to graduate students, wrap up their time at Kresge, they share more about their motivations, what they’ve learned and where they hope to go. Thank you to (clockwise, from top left): • Billy Daal, Investments • Joseph Pino, Investments • Nate Fisher, American Cities Program • Clara Graucob, Environment Program • Dina Younes, Investments • Shavaughn Armstead, Detroit Program • Aya M. IFF (CDFI) and Matrix Human Services this week celebrated the opening of the McClellan Early Childhood Center in the Gratiot Woods neighborhood on the East Side of Detroit. McClellan is the second facility after the Marygrove Early Education Center whose physical design and programming reflect the priorities identified in the Hope Starts Here Detroit framework for a coordinated, high-quality early childhood system. Like Marygrove, the design encourages play and learning while providing ample opportunity for interaction with the natural landscape surrounding the facility. https://lnkd.in/esuwQxcR

Solar combined with energy storage (solar+storage) can provide cost savings and keep essential services powered during grid outages. With funding support from Kresge’s Environment Program, Clean Energy Group (CEG) has released a series of resources for individuals and organizations who are considering implementing solar+storage projects. In a new guide titled Understanding Solar+Storage, CEG addresses 12 common questions related to solar+storage benefits. CEG also published a Project Checklist with seven steps to begin the process. Both resources are offered in English and Spanish. Download the guide: https://lnkd.in/dW6qwyEx

We are thrilled to announce that Anna Blanding and Linda Hill have been appointed to The Kresge Foundation Board of Trustees. Kresge Board Chair Cecilia Muñoz highlights the unique experience and skills our new Trustees bring to the foundation: “Anna’s career trajectory – from nonprofit endowment management to impact investing to economic and community development to philanthropy – is an impressive one. Her deep experience across these disciplines will be invaluable to the board as we continue to grow our philanthropic impact, endowment and community development investments. She has shown throughout her career a commitment to creating equitable communities and innovating the financial and impact investing sectors. Anna will be a critical voice as we think through how to invest and use financial tools for social good.” “Linda is a foremost expert on leadership, organizational management and innovation, and she uses her research and deep expertise in these areas to inform economic development and how to improve the lives of those who live in disinvested communities. For most of her career, Linda has focused on business and societal challenges that require systemic approaches and solutions, which is exactly the sort of perspective Kresge’s Board of Trustees seeks as we have always been a philanthropy focused on large-scale systems change. I very much look forward to Linda helping Kresge navigate how to become an even more effective organization.” https://lnkd.in/gK3M9kbK

It is hard to have a conversation about the continued fraying – and decline – of social cohesion in this country without referencing Robert Putnam, who cascaded into public consciousness with his seminal article, and then book, "Bowling Alone." Putnam pointed to scores of indicators demonstrating the weakening in the U.S. of the informal networks of mutual support that build community cohesion – social capital. The brilliant shorthand was that more and more Americans were “bowling alone.” His most recent book, "The Upswing: How America Came Together a Century Ago and How We Can Do It Again," which The Kresge Foundation provided grant support for, explores the idea that during the course of the 20th century, America had moved from an “I” – or self-referential, self-centered – culture in the early 1900’s to a “We” – or more community-engaged and communitarian – culture and then back again. The book, which was published in 2020 during COVID, was somewhat neglected. That is changing, and the work is now having a moment. Federal funding to make clean energy equitable is here. It’s up to cities to do the right thing. While some cities are taking practical steps to ensure their clean energy investments benefit those left behind by the energy transition, more cities must act. In this op-ed, Stefen Samarripas, senior manager with The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) policy team, outlines three key lessons city leaders should consider as they launch new federally-funded clean energy programs, and practical steps to ensure clean energy investments reach those with the greatest needs. https://lnkd.in/ehQqvyf3 #cleanenergy
