Earlier this month, we had the privilege of hosting our annual Girls Who Lead Summer Externship, where 80 high school girls traveled to various STEAM companies across San Diego. This immersive experience provided students with the unique opportunity to tour cutting-edge laboratories, engage directly with women in leadership roles, and delve into potential careers in the life sciences. Throughout the externship, students were inspired by the hands-on experiences and real-world insights that are crucial for preparing the next generation of scientists. We are immensely grateful to our sponsors for making this invaluable opportunity possible, empowering these young women to envision and pursue their future in STEAM. Special thanks to our supporters of the program: Avidity Biosciences, Inc. Bristol Myers Squibb, Hologic, Inc., Illumina, Eli Lilly and Company, Mapp Biopharmaceutical Inc, Poseida Therapeutics, Inc., Qualcomm, REVA Medical, LLC., SOLV Energy and Thermo Fisher Scientific. Interested in hosting a tour or getting involved? Contact Annie Warner to inspire the next generation of innovators.

I’m proud to highlight San Diego Gas & Electric’s latest initiative that connects Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) interns with meaningful, real-world experiences while driving positive change in our community. In our partnership with Mission Edge, 30 talented SDG&E interns have been working on projects that align with SDG&E’s four pillars of corporate social responsibility: K-16 STEM Education, Climate Awareness, Emergency Preparedness and Safety, and Economic Prosperity. This is one example of how we cultivate the next generation of leaders while giving back to our community. This program not only deepens our interns’ connection to our company, but it also showcases our commitment to corporate social responsibility and introduces them to the vital work of local San Diego nonprofits. Over four weeks, our interns organized into teams, and guided by dedicated SDG&E employee mentors, contributed 30-40 hours each to projects that make a real impact. Partnering with Generation STEAM, San Diego Fire-Rescue Foundation, Sister Cities Project, The San Diego River Park Foundation and Zero8Hundred to make a meaningful difference in our community exemplifies our commitment to: doing the right thing, championing people, and shaping the future. This program not only supports our community but also brings our interns together to work on impactful projects, setting the stage for their future careers. A very big kudos to Marvin Ordonez, Megan Vallone, Charlotte Vitak , and Michelle Fujisaki-Thomas for their leadership and management of this innovative initiative from inception to execution. A special thank you to our SDG&E employees who volunteered their time, energy and skills to mentor the intern teams through their respective projects. #SDGEgiving

I am thrilled to announce that the Life Science Station recently welcomed its inaugural group of fourth grade students. In partnership with Chula Vista Elementary School District, this new educational experience immerses students in the dynamic fields of life sciences and biotechnology through hands-on career exploration activities. Michael Bruder and his team have been amazing to work with. We are ecstatic that after years of planning—the doors are finally open, and we are on track to impact every single fourth grader in the district (~4,000 students) each year!

Thank you to the companies and organizations who opened their doors to Generation STEAM's Girls Who Lead summer externship last week! The weeklong program gave 50 high school students from around San Diego County the opportunity to tour company headquarters and laboratories, visit with scientists and engage in activities to learn about career opportunities in life science. Biocom California member companies who participated include: Avidity Biosciences, Inc., Illumina, Eli Lilly and Company, Mapp Biopharmaceutical Inc, Poseida Therapeutics, Inc., Qualcomm, REVA Medical, LLC., San Diego Gas & Electric and Thermo Fisher Scientific. During the week, students attended career panels and learned real-world steps to transition from a STEAM student into a successful STEAM professional, engaged in hands-on activities such as building toy cars and learning genomics and explored different career pathways in life science. These career exposure externships are critical in inspiring the next generation of scientists. If you’re interested in hosting a tour of your company headquarters or getting involved in our upcoming programming, contact Generation STEAM.

King-Chavez Community High School and Generation STEAM partnered up last week to connect our incoming 9th grade girls with incredible science opportunities! Through the Girls Who Lead Externship, 9th graders had the opportunity to visit five San Diego companies that are leaders in science, such as Illumina, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Avidity Biosciences, and more. Each company gave students a tour of their campus/office, introduced female identifying role models to share their stories, hosted a hands-on activity, and had discussions about career paths in their industry. #GenerationSteam #ThePrideOfSanDiego #KCNSHigh

VP of Commercial at DeciBio | Precision Medicine Strategy, Market Intelligence, Venture | HBA, Women in Bio
What an energetic turnaround to my first day at #BIO24 Of course on my way to San Diego from Los Angeles there was a stall on the 5 freeway where I sat parked for 30 minutes because why not? My day could only go up from there 😅 Got to the convention center just in time to pick up my badge and make a few new connections at the WIB booth before the evening events. Started the evening off with Women In Bio - Engage. Educate. Empower.'s plenary program featuring an all star panel where they discussed the "niche business" of Women's Health. (Inside joke- there's nothing niche about Women's Health). These WIB at BIO events are always extra special because they're like mini reunions where I get to catch up and see faces from all over the country and of course always great to see our Los Angeles members represent our newest chapter. Then immediately after... raced over to Biocom California's summer concert at the Rady Shell where they shared some of their initiatives around Generation STEAM and their newest rebrand for the group purchasing organization CORE. All before the Plain White Tees performed a collection of songs I did not know but enjoyed none the less with great company- both old connections and new. Thank you to Angus McQuilken for the invite and also to Nelly Tian for my book that served as a great conversation starter at the concert 🤣🙏🏽 Looking forward to a full day at BIO today! Who else is here?

What an amazing time at Biocom California’s annual summer concert as a part of #BIO2024! It was an honor to represent Generation STEAM along with the rest of my colleagues at the Merch booth. Thank you to all of you who purchased Merch from us as proceeds went to benefiting K-12 #STEAM education and all our initiatives across the state of CA. All of the bands were fantastic and the Plain White Ts put on an awesome show! #heytheredelilah #swaytotherhythmoflove

We invite you to participate in our upcoming program, Girls Who Lead, a week-long summer externship serving nearly 80 students from two local high schools. Throughout this comprehensive experience, high school girls will engage in industry tours, hands-on learning activities, and valuable career connections. By providing exposure to real-world STEAM applications, fostering leadership skills, and facilitating interactions with industry professionals, Girls Who Lead empowers participants to envision themselves as future leaders in the #STEAM workforce. Companies can get involved by hosting a cohort of students at their campus for a day or by hosting a workshop at the participating students’ school for an afternoon. To learn more about Girls Who Lead and other programming supporting underrepresented students across California, please visit our website https://lnkd.in/gCXnAnqq or contact Silvana DelPiccolo. #STEMeducation #STEAM #Lifescience #Cybersecurity #Tech
