The Princeton Review selected colleges based on a comprehensive survey conducted during the 2023-24 academic year. The survey included input from nearly 600 college administrators and students regarding their institutions’ sustainability policies, practices, and programs. Benjamin Freeman has been named a 2024 #PackardFellow by The David and Lucile Packard Foundation! This distinction recognizes his groundbreaking research in climate change and bird ecology. “Packard support will be transformative. It will give me the freedom to do the sorts of risky projects that I've dreamed about, and will support the intense fieldwork that I'm convinced is necessary to understand big questions in climate change ecology,” says Freeman, an assistant professor in the School of Biological Sciences. The $875,000 award associated with this fellowship will support Freeman’s efforts to develop “Tech Mountain” in the tropics. This long-term field project is focused on surveying thousands of individual birds in order to gain insight into how birds and other organisms are responding to our changing climate. https://lnkd.in/eDVzvdTt

Nature doesn’t waste energy, and nature finds ways to adapt to a changing world. Understanding those two principles led David Frost to his interest in bio-inspired design. Frost, the Elizabeth and Bill Higginbotham Professor in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology (CEEatGT), has spent the last dozen years searching for ways to use nature’s efficiency and ingenuity to improve the civil engineering field. His efforts are paying off. Terracell, a newly designed soil-powered fuel cell that could provide a sustainable alternative to batteries, was recognized as an honorable mention in the annual Fast Company Innovation by Design Awards. Terracell is roughly the size of a paperback book and uses microbes found in soil to generate energy for low-power applications. Josiah Hester, an associate professor in Georgia Tech's School of Interactive Computing who previously worked at Northwestern, directs the Ka Moamoa Lab, where the project was conceived. Chuanyi Ji, from the Georgia Tech School of Electrical & Computer Engineering, analyzed data from over 15 million consumers in 588 U.S. counties who lost power when hurricanes made landfall between January 2017 and October 2020. The results show that poorer communities did indeed wait longer for the lights to go back on.

The Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) invites applications and nominations for the Executive Director (ED) position in the Brook Byers Institute for Sustainable Systems (BBISS). BBISS, one of Georgia Tech’s Interdisciplinary Research Institutes (IRIs), brings together researchers from across Georgia Tech, including academic and research units, to support world-class sustainability-focused research, student engagement, and industry, government, and nonprofit collaboration toward achieving systemic change. The BBISS ED will be a dynamic, collaborative, and entrepreneurial leader who will unite a broad range of stakeholders around a vision to elevate and grow sustainability at Georgia Tech.
