Last week, Germany's Permanent Representative to the UN and other International Organizations in Geneva, Dr. Katharina Stasch, proudly signed the #GenevaPledge for Gender-Responsive Climate Action, that aims at advancing gender equality in climate efforts and sends a strong signal of support to #COP29 in Baku. As co-initiators of the pledge, we’re thrilled to announce that now already 70 decision makers and #IntGenderChampions have joinded in support! 👏

Over 40 Geneva-based leaders came together to sign the #GenevaPledge for Gender-Responsive Climate Action at the Palais des Nations. With so many enthusiastic signatories, the pen even ran out of ink! 🖊️✨ This powerful pledge, now backed by 60+ #INTGenderChampions and other leaders globally, aims at advancing gender equality, diversity, and inclusion in #climateaction worldwide. The pledge’s six Common Principles include: 1️⃣ Champion equitable representation 2️⃣ Advocate for gender-responsive climate finance 3️⃣ Integrate strategies to break down silos 4️⃣ Base decisions on gender-responsive analysis and data 5️⃣ Push for legal and institutional reforms 6️⃣ Promote a care perspective benefiting people and planet. With #COP29 on the horizon, the text calls for inclusive, collaborative solutions to address the unique challenges facing women, girls, and marginalized communities in the climate crisis. Thank you to the Impact Group co-chairs driving this initiative: Jagan Chapagain (International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - IFRC), Ambassador Dr. Katharina Stasch (Germany in the UN), Ambassador Christian Guillermet Fernández (Costa Rica), and Elise Buckle (Climate Bridges). Many thanks also to Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC and to Sofia Calltorp, Director of UN Women in Geneva for their remarks. A special thanks to today's MC, the wonderful Sarah Nanjala!

🌍 In today’s digital age, cyber threats know no borders—making coordinated strategies and responses more essential than ever. Cyber diplomacy plays a pivotal role by fostering communication, collaboration, and trust across nations. 🚀 On October 29-30, Germany launched a cyber diplomacy initiative in Skopje, #NorthMacedonia, to strengthen cyber cooperation and resilience across the #WesternBalkans. This event marked the start of intensified efforts in cyber diplomacy within the Partnership for Strengthening Cybersecurity, funded by the Auswärtiges Amt (Federal Foreign Office) Germany and implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH. 💭 Together, participants explored the idea of establishing a cyber diplomacy framework tailored to the Western Balkan region. Discussions centered on the needs, goals, and challenges of cyber diplomacy in this context, shaping a vision for an open, secure, stable, accessible and peaceful cyberspace. 👩💻 Participants also gained valuable insights from the experiences of Dutch, British, and EU colleagues, whose models of cyber diplomacy added inspiration and practical perspectives to Germany's efforts. Germany is excited to continue collaborating with its European partners to create synergies in #CyberDiplomacy for the Western Balkans. 🤝 In the face of evolving cyber threats, cooperation isn’t just an option—it’s a necessity. A united regional front enables us to pool resources, share knowledge, and coordinate our responses effectively. Only together can we build a resilient and secure digital future.

The United Nations General Assembly consists of six main committees, each dedicated to a specific topic and assigned relevant agenda items. The First Committee of the United Nations, also known as the Disarmament and International Security Committee, plays a crucial role in promoting global peace and security. It addresses issues like arms control, disarmament, and the prevention of conflicts. In this committee, member states engage in vital discussions to develop strategies for reducing arms proliferation and enhancing international stability. Here are three takeaways: 👉 Established in 1948, the First Committee has been pivotal in shaping disarmament policies since the onset of the Cold War, addressing the pressing need for international security in a rapidly changing world. 👉 Beyond nuclear disarmament, the committee also discusses issues like conventional arms transfers, outer space, cyber threats, and emerging technologies, ensuring a comprehensive approach to modern security challenges. 👉 The First Committee meets annually during the UN General Assembly session, allowing member states to review progress, propose new initiatives, and reinforce commitments to international treaties and agreements. #UN #FirstCommittee #Disarmament #InternationalSecurity #Peace

🇺🇳 Our Ambassador for Feminist Foreign Policy, Gesa Bräutigam, had a full schedule during the Women, Peace and Security Week in New York. From several official meetings, debates, exchanges at side events and bilateral talks, she'll bring home a lot of input on how to further implement the WPS Agenda and tackle the scourge of conflict-related sexual violence. ➡️ During their Sixth Capital-Level Meeting, the WPS Focal Points discussed the future of the #WPSAgenda in the light of the Agenda’s upcoming 25th anniversary next year. Amb. Bräutigam and her G7 counterparts also discussed possible joint WPS initiatives of the G7 with partner states in the Global South. ➡️ In the National Statement in the United Nations Security Council's open debate, Amb. Bräutigam noted: “In the Pact for the Future, we all agreed to accelerate the implementation of our commitments on Women, Peace and Security. We must do so quickly and effectively. It is neither knowledge nor awareness that are missing – it is political will and implementation.” ➡️ A special focus during the week was on acknowledging the key work of SRSG Patten and her team in fighting Sexual Violence in Conflicts for the past 15 years. Germany remains a strong supporter of the mandate and welcomes the establishment of a “Prosecutors’ Network”, as access to justice and accountability is key to #EndRapeInWar. ➡️ At the Side Event “Prosecuting Conflict-Related Sexual Violence as International Crimes under Universal Jurisdiction”, Amb. Bräutigam underlined why the Team of Experts’ work is so important and valuable, especially in light of the deeply worrying sharp increase in acts of sexual violence in conflict worldwide. ➡️ As one of the panelists at the event “Accountability and Empowerment. Supporting Survivors of CRSV”, Amb. Bräutigam raised awareness for the small but all the more vulnerable group of children born of conflict-related sexual violence. ➡️ She also gave opening remarks at side events on “Challenges and Opportunities posed by AI in International Peace and Security” as well as "Breaking Barriers. Visualizing Equal Opportunities for Women in Defence and she opened a photo exhibition on “The Women who beat ISIS”. 💪 A successful week comes to a close, but our work does not end here!

👏 Congratulations to Dr. Martin Zinkler on his re-election into the United Nations Human Rights Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture! 🇺🇳 The Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture (SPT) collaborates with all states that have ratified the Optional Protocol on the Convention Against Torture (#OPCAT) – for example, by visiting places of detention and making recommendations to governments to strengthen the protection against torture. Germany has ratified the Convention against Torture and its additional protocol and is an important contributor to the UN Fund for Victims of Torture. 🇩🇪 Dr. Zinkler, a German specialist in psychiatry and psychotherapy, has already served one term as a member of the #SPT since 2023 and was re-elected for another term today. His tireless dedication to advancing #HumanRights in psychiatry and preventing coercive measures is a great asset to the SPT and underscores the need for dignified, rights-based mental health care. We are proud to see Dr. Zinkler continue representing Germany at the #SPT and wish him all the best for his next term!

The United Nations is not perfect, but it’s the best UN we’ve got. 79 years ago, the UN Charter - its constitution, so to speak - entered into force. As a lesson to the world from the horrors of the Second World War. As the foundation for international security and peace. As the guarantor for human rights, sustainability and development. As a promise that the law of the strongest should never succeed. In today’s world this promise is broken far too often. But the major challenges of today - the climate crisis, wars & conflicts, development - can only be tackled together. That’s why we need a strong United Nations and effective multilateralism. Germany is committed to this and wants to take on more responsibility, which is why we are running for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council 2027/2028 - the most important UN body. If the United Nations was to be reinvented today, it would have to look different than when founded 79 years ago. The world has changed dramatically since the end of the Second World War. The UN itself must reflect this. That’s why we advocate for a reform of the UN, together with our partners. So that their voices - from Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East, are heard louder and clearer.
