Have you ever wondered why stars seem to twinkle or sparkle in the night sky? It’s the Earth’s atmosphere distorting starlight as seen from the ground. The Giant Magellan corrects for this using adaptive optics. https://lnkd.in/ebNgfsWR

Fantastic private tour for the CNC Advanced Technology Center’s students today at Ingersoll Machine Tools manufacturing facility. We were shown the area where the largest telescope on the planet was being built. Extremely impressive.

“We measure the turbulence in the atmosphere 2,000 times a second, and we change the curvature of the mirrors 2,000 times a second to take out the turbulence in the atmosphere,” shares Chief Scientist Rebecca Bernstein on the Giant Magellan's capabilities in a recent piece from T.R. Witcher of the American Society of Civil Engineers. https://lnkd.in/gv2bNwQf

We were thrilled to host interns from Yerkes Observatory at our #IngersollMachineTools facility! 🌟 This visit was a fantastic opportunity to showcase our role in producing the massive structure for the Giant Magellan Telescope (#GMTO), one of the world's most advanced #astronomical observatories. 🔭 The project highlights our expertise in #precisionengineering and innovation in scientific research. Engaging with the #NextGeneration of scientists and engineers is truly inspiring. 🚀 A big thanks to the interns for their enthusiasm and curiosity, and to everyone who made this visit possible. 🙌 #EnhancingFuturesTogether #YerkesObservatory #STEM #CamozziGroup

Fabrication continues on the Giant Magellan’s seventh and final primary mirror, the last required to complete the telescope’s 368 square meter light collecting surface. The post-casting clean out involves the removal of refractory material from the back the 8.4-meter mirror blank, seen here at the University of Arizona Richard F. Caris Mirror Lab. #OnThisDay in 1928, Vera Cooper Rubin was born 🎉✨ We celebrate the legacy of Vera Rubin every day, but especially today! Her research demonstrated that galaxies rotated much faster than should have been possible, based on their visible matter. These measurements were evidence of some unseen matter that added extra gravitational pull, which scientists now call "dark matter." 🌌 She also was a fierce advocate for women and early career scientists. She worked tirelessly to mentor others and make science a more welcoming and inclusive place for everyone ✨ Rubin Observatory was first called the Dark Matter Telescope, and over the years the observatory's scientific goals have expanded across all fields of astrophysics. We're immensely proud to be named in Vera Rubin's honor and to carry forward her spirit of discovery and innovation, exploring the cosmos just as she did 🔭 Happy Birthday, Vera Rubin! Your legacy continues to inspire us all 🌟

Carnegie Science is proud to join a prestigious group of institutions eligible to host Heising-Simons Foundation 51 Pegasi b Fellows. Program participants can choose to work at the Carnegie Science Observatories, Earth & Planets Laboratory, or both. Established in 2017, this fellowship provides exceptional early career scientists with the opportunity to conduct theoretical, observational, and experimental research in planetary astronomy, a growing field that connects the study of objects within our Solar System to exoplanet research. The program was named after the first planet discovered orbiting a Sun-like star—a research breakthrough in which Carnegie Science’s own Paul Butler played a critical role.
