📢 Today Global Commons Alliance's Earth Commission publishes its newest paper in The Lancet Planet. The new science builds on the #SafeAndJust Boundaries, to quantify a “Safe and Just Space” for planet and people to thrive – if Earth’s resources are better shared.👇 The paper stresses that while the planet’s ability to provide and protect is being stretched past its limits, it does remain possible for all humans to escape poverty and be safe from harm caused by Earth system change. The science builds on the Safe and Just Earth System Boundaries published in Nature last year, which found that most of the vital limits within which people and the planet can thrive have been surpassed. ⚠️ Scientists have quantified the “Safe and Just Space”: the only space rich in opportunities for people and planet. But the only way to reach this space is to reduce inequalities in how critical Earth system resources, such as freshwater and nutrients, are accessed and used - alongside economic and technological transformation. 🌎 Co-authored by over sixty leading natural and social scientists from the Earth Commission - an international science commission hosted by Future Earth, and the scientific cornerstone of the Global Commons Alliance, the report is led by Prof. Joyeeta Gupta, Prof. Xuemei Bai, and Prof. Diana Liverman. Joyeeta Gupta, former co-chair of the Earth Commission, and Professor of Environment and Development in the Global South at the University of Amsterdam, said: “We’re beginning to realise the damage that inequality is doing to the Earth. Increasing pollution and poor management of natural resources is causing significant harm to people and nature. The longer we continue to widen the gap between those who have too much and those who don’t have enough, the more extreme the consequences for all, as the support systems which underpin our way of life, our markets and our economies begin to collapse.” The paper calls for change in three areas: 🏛️ A well coordinated effort between policymakers, businesses, civil society and communities to push for changes in how we run the economy, with new policies and funding mechanisms to address inequality while reducing pressure on nature and climate. 🌱 More efficient and effective management, sharing and usage of resources at every level of society - including addressing the excess consumption of some communities. 🏗️ Investment in sustainable and affordable technologies to help us use fewer resources. Cities and businesses have a leading role to play in the transformations toward a safe and just future. The paper provides a guide to how they can use the Earth system boundaries as a basis for #ScienceBasedTargets, to become better stewards of Earth’s natural resources. 🔗 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eD2JN_53 #GlobalCommons #ForNature #EarthSystemBoundaries

"Which legacy will you leave? This was the fundamental question asked by Johan Rockstrom and the Planetary Guardians at the launch of the first-ever annual Planetary Health Check." One week on from the inaugural Planetary Health Check, Richard Branson reflects back on the findings of the research as well as what that means next. "We have a narrow window – just five years – to change course. We know the drivers of these breaches and the solutions. The interconnectedness of these systems means a "whole Earth" approach is essential - protecting one boundary helps protect them all. The future of the planet - and humanity - depends on what we do now. Let’s act while we still have the chance". In case you missed it: watch Earth4All co-chairs Owen Gaffney and Sandrine Dixson-Declève's interview with We Don't Have Time, discussing the key findings of our major global survey with Global Commons Alliance: ⌛ People are aware of the science and the risks of climate change: a majority of people acknowledge we are approaching climate and nature tipping points 🌳 People want to protect nature: over 70% of people surveyed support the idea of criminalising ecocide 🤔 There's a contradiction between people's desire for an economic system that promotes wellbeing, and increasing support for more authoritarian forms of government - we need to build trust and strengthen democracies 💰 There is support for wealth tax - and a window is opening for global action, spearheaded by Brazil Watch now ⏩ https://lnkd.in/dCdwSCqf

This partnership marks a key step in helping companies take credible action for nature through a new digital platform, set to launch in 2025. The Science Based Targets Network (SBTN), also part of the Global Commons Alliance, announced this year that the Accountability Accelerator will host the validation function to ensure independent review of targets until a new validation model is established. As part of the preparations to launch the validation service, for the past eighth months Deloitte has been supporting the Accelerator on preparing a validation platform (powered by 3rdRisk), that will help:  🔗 Centralize the entire process from submission to issuing final reports 🔗 Ensure a consistent and smooth data submission process for companies 🔗 Utilise a secure data-sharing environment 🔗 Implement a functional queries system for companies and validators to interact Learn more: https://lnkd.in/emm5wSrX #Sustainability #NatureAction #Accountability #ScienceBasedTargets #Collaboration #Innovation #COP16 Peter Schaap, Janvier Jessurun, Florence Arke, Daphne van Leent, Sedef Yagci, Natasha Milan Matic, Ph.D., Paola Delgado, Randall Krantz, Mariana Cascardo Michael, Seema Joshi, Natasha Tariq, Dean Cambridge

📢🌎 The Global Commons Alliance, our partners and core components will be in Cali, Colombia, for #COP16. Find out what we will be doing there and explore our calendar of events. ⬇️ As the impacts of biodiversity loss and climate change accelerate around us, citizens, cities and companies are realizing that we must take action together. Guidance for how to do this was published last month, in the Earth Commission’s new flagship paper on the #SafeAndJust Earth System Boundaries. The paper details where on the planet these boundaries are breached, and shows how this overlaps with the vulnerability of people exposed to harm. Among the key recommendations is legislation to safeguard the #GlobalCommons. 🌳🌊❄️ There is already widespread public support for such nature and climate action, according to a recent Ipsos UK survey that we released last month with Earth4All. People everywhere know there’s an urgent need to collaboratively safeguard our global commons for current and future generations – and that the time for bold, systemic action is now. ✊ The events we will host and attend at COP16 are designed to contribute to the collective system shift we urgently need to accelerate #SystemsChange and safeguard the global commons. We hope to see you there! 🔗 Explore our calendar of events, which is being updated regularly: https://lnkd.in/eZzVHqHN #NatureAction #NaturePositive #Biodiversity #BiodiversityLoss #EcologicalEmergency

🗽We're home! Here are some of our highlights from #ClimateWeekNYC and the UN Summit of the Future. 👇 At the start of the week, the Earth Commission co-hosted a high-level roundtable with Earth4All, PIK - Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, Planetary Guardians, Future Earth, The Earth League and the International Science Council to address the links between planetary stability, inequality, justice and human well-being. 🌎 This was followed by the unveiling of the inaugural #PlanetaryHealthCheck, a first-of-its-kind scientific tool and report on the health of the Planet. #EarthHQ, in partnership with PIK and the Planetary Guardians, helped to build and host the online presence of the Planetary Health Check. The reports, which will be published annually, support collective efforts to understand and protect the stability and resilience of Earth. 📊🌡️ #SystemsChangeLab, Bezos Earth Fund and World Resources Institute organized a session on driving food systems transformation, including sharing a glimpse of the new indicators on food and agriculture that will be launching on the data platform soon. Experts discussed how companies, NGOs, and investors can work together to break down silos and develop food and agricultural solutions within and across sectors. 🍏🚜 “Actions you take in the food system today actually impact the climate tomorrow,” said event moderator Andy Jarvis, Director of Future of Food, the Bezos Earth Fund. Sustainability leaders gathered to hear insights from companies who piloted the first science-based targets for nature at an event organized by the WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development and co-hosted by the Science Based Targets Network (SBTN), which shared key outcomes from the pilot. 🎯 In her closing remarks, Erin Billman, Executive Director, the SBTN, highlighted the significance of this milestone for corporate target setting, stating that companies now have a “vetted” proof of concept for credible action on nature. However, she acknowledged the complexity of the task, remarking: “If it were easy, we’d be reinforcing the status quo.” Hosted by New Zero World, Earth HQ and H&M Foundation, the Earth Public Information Collaborative (EPIC) held a special event to share the ‘Most important brief’, which aims to engage media agencies and the public to build Earth-centric campaigns and content that will drive wide scale behavioral change. The final event of the week for the GCA was co-hosted with ClientEarth at an iconic venue in New York, the art auction house Christie's, about the latest innovations in law and science to protect all life on Earth. 👉  Read a full events summary and explore our photo galleries: https://lnkd.in/eG_7x5PD GCA Accountability Accelerator Science Based Targets Network (SBTN)

It's great to see EPIC growing in strength. We need leaders from the arts and culture to join in the challenging endeavor of helping keep us within the planet's limits.

📝 According to writer Amitav Ghosh, “the climate crisis is a crisis of culture, and thus of imagination” which we think is absolutely correct. In response to this, last week, during Climate Week, at our event Science and Culture: Working Together for People and Planet, we announced the formation of the EPIC Creative Council - a group of some of the most creative thinkers from across the globe, representing different agencies and organizations, and we tasked them with addressing this crisis of imagination. 🌎 🙌 We are honored to count this group among our collaborative and excited to share what came out of our 3-day intensive workshops with them … but not yet. For now, you can hear from them what they got out of our time together here 👉https://lnkd.in/g2bffNdj Much more to come soon! ⚖️🌎 How can law and science drive action for a #SafeAndJust future? We co-hosted an event with ClientEarth at the art auction house Christie's during Climate Week NYC to find out.👇 The expert panel discussed how groundbreaking science and bold and innovative legal interventions are transforming corporate action and attitudes towards the climate and nature crises. Margarita Astralaga, Chair, the Global Commons Alliance, stressed the importance of covering “how legislation can help us to improve and strengthen the governance of the global commons”. She explained why placing human rights and science at the forefront of local, national, and international governance and legal action can spur the positive change we so urgently need to see. 🤝 “We need to have people in the center. We have to make sure that what we are proposing is respecting their rights. The rights of the most vulnerable communities and Indigenous Peoples. [..] Part of our job is to discuss these possibilities of new legislation that will help these rural and vulnerable communities.” Reiterating the significance of centering the most impacted people, Eriel Deranger, Executive Director and Founder of Indigenous Climate Action, member of the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation, said: “We need to actually have conversations with people on the frontlines, the frontlines of law, the frontlines of land defense, the frontlines of human rights activism.” 🌿  Laura Clarke OBE, CEO, ClientEarth agreed that the day’s conversations were pivotal to the wider movement to safeguard the global commons as governance arrangements must be in place: “We’ve brought together amazing discussion about how science and the law can drive the change that we need for people and planet to thrive together. […] What laws do we have in place, what governance arrangements do we have in place to protect our people and our home for those future generations.” 📜👪 Sweta Chakraborty, PhD, President of US Operations, We Don't Have Time, also on the Global Commons Alliance SteerCo, summarized the event powerfully when she said: “If we can actually use litigation in a way that successfully holds oil and gas polluters accountable for decades of knowledge and ultimately the poison that they have introduced to the natural environment, then we will make massive headway on overcoming the climate crisis – and being able to usher in a future that is more breathable and more equitable for our future generations.” 🌱 ➡️ See more highlights from this event and others that we hosted during #ClimateWeekNYC in our video and event summary: https://lnkd.in/eG_7x5PD #GlobalCommons #ClimateLaw #HumanRights #ClimateJustice #OurCommonFuture #ClimateWeek
