Yesterday, Severino, President of the International Alliance of Waste Pickers, spoke at the 16th Annual Engaging Business Forum in Atlanta. In his presentation, Severino emphasised the need for a just and equitable transition for waste pickers and other workers in the informal waste and recycling sector. He also stressed the importance of using a human rights-based approach when moving towards a circular economy. The inaugural meeting of the International Alliance of Waste Pickers Executive Council was recently held in Kathmandu from September 19th to 22nd. The energy in the meeting was palpable, with 17 out of 19 Executive Council members and 3 Office bearers from all five regions in attendance. President Severino Lima Junior set the tone for a new era in the waste pickers movement, emphasising the importance of democratically elected leadership and transparent decision-making. The meeting was a whirlwind of activity, with Vice President Sushila Sable leading discussions on the alliance’s work plans and Treasurer Maditlhare Koena presenting a unanimously approved budget for October 2024 to April 2026. The announcement of the Advocacy, Worker Education, and Communication subcommittees and the strategic meetings of the Human Resource Management Subcommittee and Finance Committee added even more interest and participation to the mix. The executive council members shared their passion, reflections, and vision for the IAWP. They outlined a roadmap for registration, steps to strengthen the international organising of waste pickers, and made plans for advocacy and partnerships. Amidst all the intense decision-making, there was also time for leisure and recreational activities, making it a truly unforgettable week of progress and camaraderie.
