One of the fastest growing cities in Atlantic Canada, City of Moncton / Ville de Moncton, and its mayor, Dawn Arnold, joined the Bloomberg Philanthropies City Data Alliance this summer eager to “leverage the power of data to create a thriving, inclusive, and sustainable community.” #GovEx coaches Lauren Kaskey and Kel W. visited the city in August to kick off the important work of developing a citywide data strategy, improving data literacy across the workforce, and developing smart housing and urban growth policies. #datadriven #dataforgood #sustainability

I was honored to represent the Bloomberg Center for Government Excellence alongside my colleague Mary Conway Vaughan at the Ensuring Responsible AI Roundtable hosted by the IBM Center for The Business of Government in collaboration with NFBPA National. This incredible event brought together government leaders, scholars, data scientists, and grassroots organizers to explore how we can leverage AI responsibly in the public sector while addressing the risks and challenges. Two key themes emerged from our discussions: 1) The crucial role of intergovernmental collaboration—across local, state, and federal levels—in both governing and utilizing AI. 2) The fundamental importance of performance management practices, particularly strong data management strategies, in ensuring effective AI applications at the local government level - which is core to the GovEx mission. Grateful for the opportunity to be part of these important conversations and to contribute to shaping the future of AI in government! A special thanks to Daniel Chenok and Major F. Riddick, Jr. for hosting the forum - and to Barrett and Greene Inc. who will be summarizing these timely conversations. #AI #data #performancemanagement #intergovernmentalsystems #localgovernment

Dogs are a mayor’s best friend. 🐾 Last month, Mayor Jane Castor and her pup, Alcaldesa (“female mayor” in Spanish), kicked off City of Tampa participation in the Bloomberg Philanthropies City Data Alliance! They gathered alongside 40 staffers from 17 departments at Tampa’s new City Center building to launch their work with the support of GovEx coaches. The goal? Use data collection to better meet community needs. “It won’t be easy, but the reward will be worth the work,” says Mayor Castor. #tampa #datadriven #dataforgood

📣 GovEx is proud to present its 2023 Impact Report: 📊 “Leading the Way to Data-Driven Cities of the Future” 📊 The report details a year of innovation and evolving efforts to expand the use of data to improve lives around the world. In 2023, GovEx: * Expanded our work into 10 additional countries and more than 150 new cities, counties, and states. * Welcomed 22 new mayors into the Bloomberg Philanthropies City Data Alliance — bringing the total number of residents served by mayors in the program to 45 million. * Introduced City AI Connect, a global learning community and digital platform for cities to trial and advance the usage of generative AI. Most importantly, we worked to create a world in which cities — and public sector workers at large — are equipped to use data to solve big problems, advance future challenges, and provide better services to more people. Amid a sharp decline in bus ridership during the pandemic and a commitment to boost mass transit for a greener future, City of Iowa City made a bold move: free rides. But, with no fare transactions to track, proving the program's impact was a challenge. Enter GovEx Coach Rachel Bloom and Data Analyst Maeve Mulholland, who teamed up with Iowa City leaders to develop a creative solution to the problem, gain further insight into the program, and increase equity in access to public transportation. Since implementing its free-fare program, the city has used data to show an increased bus ridership of 40% — compared with a 10% post-pandemic increase nationwide — and a reduction in tailpipe carbon emissions by approximately 284 metric tons. 🚍 🎧 Listen to the latest episode of the GovEx Data Points Podcast to find out how the found numbers to crunch! https://hubs.ly/Q02MqmFn0

Witnessing the deep engagement and impact of the Bloomberg Philanthropies City Data Alliance program across entire city governments is so rewarding. Earlier this week hundreds of workers from the 23 cities currently engaged in the Alliance gathered virtually to begin the journey toward creating citywide data strategies. A key product of participation in the program, these strategies will guide how each city collects, stores, and uses data going forward. Laila Sorurbakhsh, PhD, Director of the GovEx Academy, captured a powerful moment of this kick-off connecting with the team in Municipalidad de San Miguel de Tucumán. It is amazing to see teams so invested in data for good! #dataisforeveryone #dataforgood #datadriven #govex

While this fall will be the first time in 15 years that I won’t be teaching traditional undergrads and grads 😢, at The Johns Hopkins University, I get to work with city government officials on using data to create better policy. Through the Bloomberg Center for Government Excellence’s City Data Alliance program, we work with cities all across the western hemisphere on developing a citywide data strategy over the course of 6 months. This picture captures my favorite moment in Rudy de Leon Dinglas, Ph.D.’s and my keynote speech yesterday where I was able to engage with the whole city of San Miguel de Tucumán, Argentina! We have such a great cohort (you’ll see the 253 unique Zoom participants, not counting whole city teams like this one!), and all are so engaged and so excited to start this work. It’s truly inspirational to see so many dedicated people working so hard for the public good, and it is an honor for me to play a small role in helping them accomplish their missions. So grateful! 🙏🏻
