About us
For more than 30 years, The Governor's Prevention Partnership has empowered Connecticut families and strengthened communities through a public-private partnership to reduce the risk of substance abuse among our youth. We act as a catalyst for change by connecting schools, parents and organizations with each other and with the resources they need to launch effective risk prevention and intervention strategies. As the result of our work, the state has seen a drop in underage drinking rates, fewer youth in our criminal justice systems and a measurable growth in the number of mentoring programs and youth served.

The Governor's Prevention Partnership Co-President Kelly Juleson joined with Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz, Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent in Charge of New England David Lanzoni, State Senator MD Rahman, State Rep. Jill Barry, and other #GlastonburyCT officials to announce the upcoming #DrugTakebackDay on October 26, 2024. This day is an opportunity to round up all those expired or unwanted #prescription #OTC medications around our homes and make sure they are disposed of safely and in an environmentally-friendly manner. Use the site locator (https://lnkd.in/eW6PWiJ5) to find a collection spot near you, or visit preventionct.org to request your own Deterra System delivered to your home! The Partnership is excited to announce that CBIA President & CEO Chris DiPentima will be our 35th Anniversary Celebration Event Chair—a selection that couldn’t be more fitting! CBIA has been there for us since 1989, when Governor William O’Neill turned to then-president John Rathgeber to serve on our Board of Directors—and Joe Brennan, our current co-chair, succeeded John on our board in 2005 when he took the helm at CBIA. CBIA is Connecticut’s oldest business organization and fully understands the importance of preparing today’s youth for tomorrow’s workforce. As John, Joe, and Chris can attest, #Connecticut has consistently had one of the nation’s most productive workforces. Employee productivity suffers with #drug and #alcohol misuse, when parents are worried about the threats facing their youth at home, and when new professionals haven’t had strong mentors. Investing in The Governor's Prevention Partnership is a smart business decision that pays dividends, and we thank Chris for chairing the 35th Anniversary Celebration, and CBIA for its enduring support through our #35YearsOfPrevention . #RedRibbonWeek begins October 23, and it's a great time to look through our own medicine cabinets for expired or unwanted pills, liquids, or powders. Any substance we don't need poses a potential threat, but Deterra System Deactivation Pouches make it easy to eliminate that risk - in our household trash! Congresswoman Rosa Delauro knows the importance of safely disposing of our medications, and shows us how easy the process is! Thank you to Congresswoman Delauro for taking the time to share this important message! Peter Yarrow was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1938. More than 60 years later he co-founded “Operation Respect,” a non-profit #education and #advocacy organization dedicated to advancing the social and emotional growth of young people to help them develop into compassionate, respectful, ethical, and civically engaged adults. Operation Respect merged with The Governor's Prevention Partnership in 2009, and we continue to serve as the state coordinator of the internationally-acclaimed Olweus Bullying Prevention Program. Long-time partners in our work, Aetna, a CVS Health Company and M&T Bank (then People’s United Bank) helped make that relationship possible, and they continue to support the meaningful work done to help young people throughout #Connecticut.

From a parent participating in Por Los Ninos trainings to now an integral part of our team at The Governor's Prevention Partnership, Susan Sarmiento has made a remarkable impact in the field of #Prevention. With over five years of dedication, she has fully embraced her role as Program Manager of Community Engagement for Prevention. As #HispanicHeritageMonth comes to a close, we want to highlight Susan’s incredible contributions, not only to prevention but also to our organization. She has helped countless individuals while upholding one of our core values—Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion—by translating our materials into Spanish, offering Spanish-only trainings, and providing essential resources to the Hispanic community. Gov. William A. O’Neill founded The Governor's Prevention Partnership in 1989 as “Drugs Don’t Work,” but without the support of our dedicated private partners, the mission would have struggled. With a mission statement and dedication to youth substance use #prevention, Pitney Bowes was among our #foundingfunders. In 2015, Pitney Bowes funded the creation of the Regional Mentoring Collaborative Toolkit. Since then, Regional Mentoring Collaboratives have been created in #GreaterBridgeport, #GreaterHartford, #GreaterNewHaven, #GreaterNewLondon, and #Stamford. Visit https://shorturl.at/kC5DL to learn more about our existing collaboratives, and when you’re ready to get involved, we’re ready to #collaborate. https://lnkd.in/e4jF5qEg
