🌪️ Climate change isn’t just a future concern—it’s here, and it’s not just reshaping our summers, but every season. At Graphicacy, we are honored to have partnered with the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) to build an automated API for their Danger Season tool, tracking the extreme weather that has impacted millions across the U.S. this year alone. As highlighted in the Los Angeles Times article in our post below, more than half the U.S. population faced extreme weather alerts by mid-2023, from hurricanes to severe heatwaves. 🌡️ What we did: We automated UCS’s data pipeline to efficiently process daily weather alerts, population data, and climate indicators, reducing AWS costs by over 50%. This tool now seamlessly shares real-time updates with policymakers, scientists, and the public to drive urgent action on climate change. 💡 Why it matters: Extreme weather, especially during an expanded “Danger Season,” continues to increase in frequency and intensity, and tools like these help translate complex data into compelling, actionable insights. Explore the behind the scenes look at how Graphicacy’s data team is building data tools like this that ensure scientists, policymakers and the public are more informed. We recently had the opportunity to partner with the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) to build an API for their Danger Season tool, supporting their critical research on extreme weather patterns, as highlighted in a recent Los Angeles Times article. As noted in this article, more than 200 million Americans have experienced the reality of "Danger Season"—a period marked by record-breaking temperatures, wildfires, and severe storms. The UCS team has been at the forefront of this research, working tirelessly to track and analyze these alarming weather trends. Our work with UCS exemplifies what we do best—collaborating with our client partners to meet a wide range of data-focused needs. We build both front-end and back-end tools that make complex data accessible, understandable, and impactful. By creating this API, we’ve enabled UCS to share their findings more efficiently with the media, policymakers, scientists, and the public, ensuring that the data they collect drives meaningful conversations and decisions about our climate future. At Graphicacy, we're not just visual storytellers—we're enablers of change. We're proud to contribute to projects that matter, helping organizations like UCS bring critical issues to the forefront. Together, we’re visualizing a better, more informed world. The Institute on Race, Power and Political Economy at The New School partnered with our team at Graphicacy to transform their data on racial wealth disparities into compelling visual narratives. Through innovative scrollytelling, data visualization, and motion graphic videos, we made critical information accessible to a wider audience. Dr. Darrick Hamilton and the Institute aimed to make their series of reports more digestible. They turned to Graphicacy to work hand-in-hand with their team to develop a visually engaging website, illuminating racial wealth divides across seven American cities. "Our team was excited to partner with Dr. Hamilton to share the intricate story of racial wealth disparities,” said Carni Klirs, Creative Director at Graphicacy. While our work Initially focused on Chicago, the project expanded quickly to bring to life the data behind reports focused on racial wealth disparities in Baltimore, Boston, Los Angeles, Miami, Tulsa, and Washington, DC. Graphicacy helps organizations tell inspiring stories using facts, figures, and trends. We create experiences that connect people emotionally and invite them to act.
