🔬 Dr. Gord Paterson presented Great Lakes conservation research at #SETAC2024 in Fort Worth, Texas. The team's innovative study reveals significant epigenetic changes in Lake Superior fish populations exposed to legacy mining contamination at Buffalo Reef. Using advanced DNA sequencing techniques, they've identified crucial biological responses that could inform a multi-billion dollar restoration project. Key Findings: • Documented DNA damage pathways in affected fish • Identified stress responses in native species • Discovered altered nutrient metabolism patterns • Implications for Great Lakes conservation efforts Research Team: • Gord Paterson, Ph.D. (BioSci/GLRC) • John McCall, M.S. '24 (Lead Author) • Kristin Brzeski, Ph.D. (CFRES) 📄 Full presentation details: https://lnkd.in/gYfKdt_U #EnvironmentalScience #Conservation #GreatLakes #Research #Sustainability #MarineScience #MichiganTech #WaterResearch #BiologicalSciences

GLRC member Erika Vye with the Lake Superior Stewardship Initiative hosted an interactive learning event titled "Wonders of the Watershed Summit." The summit sought to deepen the understanding of local #ecosystems for 6th grade students from across the Western UP. Using hands-on learning stations facilitated by community partners, students learned about ecosystem health, water quality, and the interconnections between the watershed, communities, and populations. “This event provides students a unique opportunity to connect with local knowledge holders and deepen their understanding of how the health of our watershed reflects the health of our communities,” said Erika Vye, Geosciences Research Scientist at the Great Lakes Research Center at Michigan Tech. "We hope to inspire a new generation of #GreatLakes stewards."

Meet Kora Johnson! 👋 She currently works as an intern at the Great Lakes Research Center (GLRC) while earning her undergraduate degree in Environmental Engineering (Michigan Tech Civil, Environmental, and Geospatial Engineering) here at Michigan Technological University. She anticipates graduating in the spring of 2025. This internship has given Kora opportunities to take boat trips to deploy buoys in Lake Superior and to work on NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration vessels as a research assistant. She explained, “I’ve found myself surrounded by people who are always eager to explain their work and share their knowledge.” This internship helped set a course for Kora after she finishes her undergraduate degree: she plans on pursuing a master’s degree in a similar field. She said, “Overall the experience of an internship within the GLRC has shown me how collaborative, unique research projects are built, and I’ve learned that I would like to be able to contribute to similar projects as a professional in the future.”
