Congratulations to GLRC graduate student Mitch Kehne on winning the Outstanding Student Poster award from the International Association for Great Lakes Research (IAGLR)'s 67th Annual Conference on Great Lakes Research! 🎉

GLRC member Erika Vye with the Lake Superior Stewardship Initiative hosted an interactive learning event titled "Wonders of the Watershed Summit." The summit sought to deepen the understanding of local #ecosystems for 6th grade students from across the Western UP. Using hands-on learning stations facilitated by community partners, students learned about ecosystem health, water quality, and the interconnections between the watershed, communities, and populations. “This event provides students a unique opportunity to connect with local knowledge holders and deepen their understanding of how the health of our watershed reflects the health of our communities,” said Erika Vye, Geosciences Research Scientist at the Great Lakes Research Center at Michigan Tech. "We hope to inspire a new generation of #GreatLakes stewards."

Exciting research from the Great Lakes Research Center (GLRC) at Michigan Technological University! Dr. Gordon Paterson (BioSci/GLRC) and recent graduate Brian Reeves '23 (B.S. Ecology and Evolutionary Biology) have published a groundbreaking paper in the Bulletin of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology. Title: "Temporal and spatial comparison of mercury bioaccumulation in the lower trophic levels of a post-glacial lake food web" Key points: Reeves is the lead author, showcasing undergraduate research excellence Study demonstrates the role of lower trophic level aquatic invertebrates in mercury biomagnification in Great Lakes ecosystems Research originated from Reeves' 2022 Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship This work contributes significantly to our understanding of anthropogenic pollutants in crucial freshwater systems. Meet Kora Johnson! 👋 She currently works as an intern at the Great Lakes Research Center (GLRC) while earning her undergraduate degree in Environmental Engineering (Michigan Tech Civil, Environmental, and Geospatial Engineering) here at Michigan Technological University. She anticipates graduating in the spring of 2025. This internship has given Kora opportunities to take boat trips to deploy buoys in Lake Superior and to work on NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration vessels as a research assistant. She explained, “I’ve found myself surrounded by people who are always eager to explain their work and share their knowledge.” This internship helped set a course for Kora after she finishes her undergraduate degree: she plans on pursuing a master’s degree in a similar field. She said, “Overall the experience of an internship within the GLRC has shown me how collaborative, unique research projects are built, and I’ve learned that I would like to be able to contribute to similar projects as a professional in the future.”
