🌟 2024 AIA Wisconsin Design Award Winner Highlight 🌟 Congratulations to Quorum Architects, Inc. and project architect Allyson Nemec, AIA as recipients of a 2024 AIA Wisconsin Special Recognition Award, recognizing outstanding achievement in Campus Revitalization. The redevelopment of the Wgema [pronounced Ga-mah] or “Chief” Campus by the Forest County Potawatomi Community is a model of sustainability and cultural preservation, guided by their seven-generational decision-making values. The project repurposes early 20th-century Germanic collegiate buildings into modern office, educational, and cultural spaces, combining historical rehabilitation with advanced sustainability practices, including a DOE grant for integrating sustainable systems. Renovations began with Wunder Hall, now Bgemagen [Bug-mah-gen] or "War Club," which houses Potawatomi Business Development offices. Havenwood House was restored to house Hands in Harmony, a non-profit offering free music lessons to local youth. The Albrecht Hall and Library were redeveloped into Wgechda [Getch-duh] or "Warrior" Building, linked by a modern glass curtain wall entry vestibule that highlights historic details. Wgechda now hosts executive offices and a Native American cultural center, earning LEED Certification. A recessed parking structure was added to preserve the campus’s historic visual character, and the Wgemas building was transformed into a dining hall and offices for Native American non-profits, supporting tribal entrepreneurship. The final renovation, Tthigwe [Chig-gwe] or “Thunderbird,” converted a 1930s gymnasium into a tribal health and wellness center for the campus charter school, with plans for LEED O&M Certification in 2025. This revitalization honors Potawatomi cultural values, preserves historic architecture, and promotes environmental stewardship and community well-being. "This is a well-considered campus-wide intervention...they didn't alter that much [from when the Native American tribe deeded it], but they brought back the native landscape. It was an extremely subtle touch, but speaks volumes about the project's values." -Corey Squire, AIA, 2024 Juror (Bora Architecture & Interiors) Architecture Firm: Quorum Architects, Inc. 🌟 2024 AIA Wisconsin Design Award Winner Highlight 🌟 Congratulations to Johnsen Schmaling Architects and project architects Brian Johnsen, AIA & Sebastian Schmaling, AIA, LEED AP as one of only 3 recipients of a 2024 AIA Wisconsin Honor Award for overall design excellence, which is the highest honor given. Adventure Rock, a community climbing gym located in a repurposed industrial warehouse on Milwaukee’s south side, exemplifies the transformative potential of adaptive reuse in architecture. The project transformed a utilitarian 1940s warehouse, once slated for demolition, into a vibrant bouldering center. Stripped down to its structural bones, the cramped production spaces were converted into a spacious, open-plan gym that engages the surrounding community visually and programmatically, turning a functionally obsolete building into a lively social hub. To enhance street presence and maximize natural light, a significant portion of the warehouse’s perimeter wall was replaced with a tall glass curtainwall. This curtainwall, angled to create an oblique colonnade, seamlessly bridges the interior and exterior while inviting views into the dynamic activity inside. A bright-red ceiling plane wraps down into a continuous horizontal sill, guiding visitors from the entrance toward the check-in counter. The gym’s support spaces, including classrooms, changing rooms, lockers, and a yoga studio, are positioned around a central open hall dominated by a sculptural climbing vessel. Visible from the street through the glass façade, this striking feature doubles as Adventure Rock’s main signage, drawing attention and illuminating the sidewalk with the silhouettes of climbers. By day and night, the gym serves as an engaging and recognizable landmark in the neighborhood. "This project really transformed the street presence. The bouldering wall is such a unique form, so to have the glass facade show off this sculptural object inside, which is also functional, was an effective way to activate the street. There's special skill and accomplishment that comes from adopting a previously 'not beautiful' building." -Corey Squire, AIA, 2024 Juror (Bora Architecture & Interiors) Architecture Firm: Johnsen Schmaling Architects Design Architects: Brian Johnsen, AIA & Sebastian Schmaling, AIA, LEED AP Design Team Members: P.J.
