change:WATER Labs’ “shrink wrap for crap” is enabling no-water, no-power, and no-plumbing sanitation systems by rapidly evaporating 95% of human waste without any type of energy. The startup’s waste-evaporating #iThrone toilet can provide homes with a working toilet without the need for plumbing or power—a growing need in the face of the $19B market for non-sewered toilets, as 40% of the world lacks access to safe sanitation. So far, the startup has attracted $400k+ in paid contracts and signed LOIs for 6k+ units. Watch CEO Diana Yousef-Martinek’s pitch from #ClimatetechSummit to learn more. #sanitation #climatechange #refugees #globalhealth #wastemanagement

“It completely flips the usual paradigm on its head: usually you spend all your time making your system work for the plant, and we went, ‘Oh, can we make the plant work for the system?’” says Phytoform CEO William Pelton. The startup is developing a gene-edited “tiny tomato” that is both short and horizontally compact, about one-sixth the size of a traditional tomato plant with five times the yield per area. Their size means they require less water, fewer nutrients, and lower energy expenditures, plus they’re perfect for vertical farming.
