Last week our Staff Software Engineer William Hakim shared his thoughts on building with artificial intelligence. His key observation? AI applications thrive not just based on technology, but from (in his words) understanding a customer’s workflow and fitting AI into it. This week it is Nat Bullard’s turn, and it builds on Will’sz. Building with artificial intelligence in order to enable better business and strategy decision-making in energy transition means building with accuracy, and building for choice and customization. Really excellent piece from William Hakim, a Halcyon staff engineer who has written a lot of the core code in our product. Will shares the kind of insights on what AI can do today that’s really valuable and what it can’t, writing from the kind of perspective that can only come from directly building the thing.
One of my favorite reads so far this year. What can one learn not just from working in and on large language models for a decade - but also learn from working with them as well? William Hakim lays it out eloquently and usefully: the best models keep getting better and general purpose capabilities push the frontier of what is possible further and faster. But, specialization matters too, not so much in terms of model tuning but rather, in terms of deciding what to do with them. Compelling specific use of general purpose technology comes from two factors: domain expertise, and understanding customer workflow. Neither of those factors can be abstracted away into a model. As Will says, "I am incredibly excited to be part of the next two years of AI development. But reflecting on technology’s past has reminded me that the utility of future technological advances remains grounded in the same old fundamentals: understanding the domain, and understanding the user." As for me, I'm excited to keep learning and musing on what can be, and will be, as we work with AI dedicated to decarbonization and building the future. https://lnkd.in/gED8-qUB

Last week, Sam Steyer shared some insight into the valuable information contained within utility filings like integrated resource plans (IRPs) and rate cases. This week, we’re back with some examples of how exactly we’re helping make this information more accessible. Check it out 👇
Last week, we told you (our LinkedIn friends) about the value hidden in utilities' Integrated Resource Plans. This week, we're going to show you! https://lnkd.in/gF48FkG3 In this post, we demonstrate parsing utility filings by the 10s. Please DM me if that's of interest, or especially if parsing IRPs at really big scale (100s or 1,000s) is of interest! I'm happy to share some Halcyon data.

Understanding a power utility's plans for future growth is not simple. Utility integrated resource plans are dense documents, and even expert readers can spend hours deciphering terms and disentangling essential information from thousands of pages of text. This effort may not be simple, but it is essential. It is also structured, when you think about it strategically: we will ask the same sorts of questions vertically (with any given utility) and horizontally (across many utilities). That structure means that technology can syndicate what would be one effort of understanding one utility into many (hundreds) of efforts understanding many utilities. The technical term for this effort is batch processing, and it is yet another unlock towards greater speed and scale in decarbonization investment. Read on for more from Sam Steyer, and another preview of a speed-and-scale information implementation for the energy transition. https://lnkd.in/gFQ6_hGw

Integrated Resource Plans (#IRPs) are like a utility’s long-term roadmap. And rate cases are legal proceedings where the utilities negotiates with the public on what price they should get to charge for providing #electricity Good bet there’s probably some pretty valuable information contained within them, right? Especially if you’re looking to sell into a utility, or partner with one to build out some new generation. But only some states have them publicly available. And even then, they’re published inconsistently. And even then, they’re really, really hard to read. Our very own Sam Steyer breaks down the problem and the opportunity in our latest “Unlocking the Secrets of Utility Filings (pt 1).” We’ll be back next week with some examples of how we’re helping make this information more accessible and valuable - check it out 👇
Utility filings are so deeply valuable for clean energy development and also... a bit painful to read. In this week's Halcyon blog post, I share some ways that climatetech companies can gain huge benefits from the two essential filings for intestor-owned utilities: ✨ Integrated Resource Plans and Rate Cases. ✨ At the end of the post, I begin to explore how you can work with a Large Language Model co-reader to get maximum useful information from these filings with minimum pain. There's more to come on that in Part II, next week! (Heartfelt thank you to Sharon Reishus, who has much, much more knowledge than I do on this topic, for editing.) https://lnkd.in/gQrAiZg8

Finding #PMF is a grind. Beyond the destination itself, one of the most important decisions you'll make is who you invite along with you on the journey. Peter Nocchiero has been an incredible partner for us on ours. If you're an early stage climate company, you need to check this out 👇
When you’re in the trenches building, amazing things reveal themselves that you could never have foreseen at the outset.✨☺️ Life imitates art and all that. I have been hard at work creating a product/market fit course for climate software startups and along the way I found an incredible launch partner in Koray Parmaks from Carbon Zero Capital. 🚀 Koray, a Founder/CEO turned investor, and his partner Eric Tong, are putting $ from their exits into climate startups.💚 Together, we are offering an invite-only bootcamp to help selected founders gain conviction on the path to Strong PMF.🧗♀️🦾 💰At the end of the bootcamp, Carbon Zero Capital will make investments in bootcamp grads that meet their PMF criteria.💰 Yes, for real. Our PMF bootcamp helps early stage stage climate founders hit their next milestones📈: -> Progress $0-500k, $500k-3M ARR -> Increase % customers that truly love your product -> Patch your leaky bucket (funnel) -> Right-size your unit economics -> Raise your next round If you want to join the bootcamp or learn more, request access at https://lnkd.in/g3yrQQvi !!🤘
Level-up your PMF 💚

Let's face it - events and conferences are exhausting. Keeping track of your own meetings and commitments is oftentimes more than just a one-person job 😧 . And keeping up with all the news, announcements, partnerships, commitments, and conversations of note that happen at the global powerhouse that is #climateweeknyc? Basically impossible. But not for an #LLM. Check out Nat Bullard's latest, "An LLM Goes to Climate Week" below 👇 https://lnkd.in/gvev7tJq
The One Where a Large Language Model Goes to Climate Week. Last week I (along with many thousands of you on LinkedIn) was in New York City for Climate Week. I've been attending for more than a decade, since it was a side show of the UN General Assembly. These days, it can feel like the main show, particularly for those working in energy and decarbonization. Any human attending the hundreds of separate events runs into the limits of time and space. It's impossible for any person to see more than a small fraction of the available talks, and see any but a tiny quantum of fellow travelers in town. We all operate in edit moment, and it can be frustrating to know what you're missing. But - this sort of scale is not a problem for a large language model. So, we sent one (so to speak) to Climate Week, and I wrote about it. Click through to see a bit of what I asked Halcyon to help me discover, and what I learned. Happy reading. https://lnkd.in/gexyqbkH
