Last week, Leah Berlin from H&A teamed up with David Mazzei, P.E., from KELLER Construction to host a tour of the School of Public Health & Health Sciences Building project for civil engineering students from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The students got to learn about ground improvement and observe the construction of aggregate piers firsthand! A big thank you to Fontaine Bros., Inc. for making this tour possible and for providing PPE and to Zack Westgate for bringing his senior foundation design class to the site. Together, we’re not just building structures, but also educating future engineers.

The Oregon Department of Energy published the Oregon Energy Security Plan which identifies risks to electricity, liquid fuel, and natural gas systems, and proposes ways to mitigate those risks. Experts in our Resilience Team—Daniele Spirandelli, Laura Hanson, Anna Murphy, David Rother, and Michelle Toner partnered with ODOE and CNA to deliver a vulnerability assessment of all three energy systems by evaluating their exposure, sensitivity, potential impacts, and adaptive capacities to a range of natural hazards. The assessment revealed the highest risks to all three energy systems are the Cascadia Subduction Zone 9.0 magnitude earthquake (including tsunami and landslides that could be triggered), wildfires, windstorms, and winter storms. Additional natural hazards assessed included drought, flood, and lightning. Our team developed a set of recommended physical and operational mitigation measures for each energy system in each of the six planning regions across the state, to address the highest vulnerabilities of each system in each region.
The Oregon Department of Energy recently published a new Oregon Energy Security Plan that outlines the state’s current energy infrastructure, quantifies threats and hazards that cause energy insecurity, and identifies potential measures the state and its partners can implement to manage risk and strengthen Oregon’s energy security. We at H&A embed health and safety in everything we do. It’s not just about ensuring safe workplaces, but also about preparing for emergencies that could occur anywhere. Recently, staff from our office in Burlington, Massachusetts, earned their first aid certification from the American Red Cross. After completing an online course, they met up for a hands-on training, during which they learned to respond quickly and effectively in critical situations. Thanks to everyone who took part in creating a safer environment for both our employees and the communities we serve! #HealthAndSafety #FirstAidTraining #EmergencyPreparedness Learn more about our health and safety program: https://lnkd.in/e34BmjUF
