[#Grateful] I am filled with incredible gratitude having just spent an inspiring few days with colleagues in #Ethiopia kicking off our #GenderStudy in a #ParticipatoryDesignWorkshop held on October 2nd in Addis Ababa. This collaborative effort led by health.enabled in collaboration with CDHi- Center for Digital Health and Implementation Science, Gender Equity Unit at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health supported by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance marks an essential milestone in exploring how #gender and #genderdynamics shape #digitalhealth #informationsystems for #immunization. Through participatory design, we brought together stakeholders to map the gender landscape within Ethiopia’s Digital Health Information (DHI) ecosystem. Our discussions highlighted the significant #genderdigitaldivide —women are less likely to own mobile phones and access critical health services, which poses challenges to equitable immunization efforts. 💡 By taking a #genderintentional approach, we can support countries to address these disparities in every stage of digital health interventions—from planning to implementation and monitoring. Promoting #genderresponsive and #gendertransformative strategies is vital to ensure that no one is left behind, especially when it comes to life-saving immunization services. It was also wonderful to see, Päivi Sillanaukee, representing #Finland, with whom we have been collaborating on the Digital Health Exemplars research with Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health The Center for Global Digital Health Innovation. Attending the Novartis Foundation's #AI4HealthyCities event highlighted the transformative power of AI in reimagining #publichealth, especially in collaboration with the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. As a native #NewYorker it's exciting to hear about efforts to create a single source of truth that tells the full story of the city's health with a focus on #cardiovasculardisease - the leading cause of death in NYC. Health is a team sport, requiring us to look both inside and outside our health systems to gain a comprehensive view. By driving meaningful insights and addressing inequities, we can ensure that our models truly reflect the diverse contexts of our communities. For those of us living in cities, it's essential to make sure our unique challenges are reflected in policies and global health governance. The #HealthyNYC Game Plan is a bold #populationhealth agenda aimed at increasing life expectancy by tackling preventable deaths, codified into law and reported on annually. Learning from global leaders like #Finland, we see the importance of integrating services tied to the social determinants of health with health services and data to better understand how lifestyle and behavior impact #healthoutcomes. Ultimately, the most personalized care is #selfcare - empowered by data-driven education and hyper-personalization. We need to co-develop solutions that engage people within their specific contexts, leveraging collective brainpower for true precision population health. At Devex's "The Future Can’t Wait" event, the message was clear: Women around the world deserve not just access to #qualityhealthcare, but care that is respectful, dignified, and empowers them to make informed decisions about their health. We must shift our focus from global priorities to #localized, #context-driven solutions that elevate subnational governments and local #entrepreneurs who understand the unique needs of their #communities. As we push forward, here are five critical actions from the session discussing the recent World Health Organization #MaternalHealth resolution that can guide our #collectiveimpact efforts: Engage #SubnationalGovernments: Too often left out of the conversation, these governments are uniquely positioned to adapt and implement health interventions that resonate with local contexts. Their involvement is key to creating lasting change. Empower #LocalEntrepreneurs: The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) highlighted the power of distributing essential commodities through local enterprises and outsourcing more distribution and monitoring to local businesses, ensuring services reach those who need them most. Increase #Transparency and #Accountability: Models like #Nigeria's sector-wide approach to health (#SWAPs) provide an example for how exposing inefficiencies and inequities can drive better outcomes. Expand #StakeholderEngagement: From community members to international partners, every voice is vital in shaping health systems that work, expanding engagement ensures that interventions are well-rounded and effective. Support #FrontlineHealthWorkers, Especially Women: Countries like Nigeria have shown the importance of training and supporting women health workers. These workers are essential to providing quality care, particularly in underserved areas, but they need education for their children, flexibility in working away from home, and #safety and security. The path forward requires us to think differently, to innovate, and to collaborate more effectively. As we work towards maternal health solutions, let’s remember that this isn’t just about healthcare—it's about people, human rights, equity, and the future we are shaping today. #MaternalHealth #GlobalHealth #WomenInHealth #HealthSystemsStrengthening #TheFutureCantWait

Exciting times are ahead as we stand on the verge of a new intelligence age! It was great to catch up with two of my inspirations striving to harness the benefits of #AI for better health and wellbeing, Debbie Rogers from Reach Digital Health and Rebecca Distler from OpenAI. At health.enabled, we recognize the transformative power of #GenAI in addressing global challenges and advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs). Wise words opened this morning's #UNGA79 event focused on AI: “If we cannot stay ahead of it, let’s at least say abreast of it.” I was blown away by how far the technology has come and the impacts it is having already in #health with 10BedICU, #agriculture with Digital Green, and #education with Kytabu. From supporting health workers with AI-driven tools to helping teachers create personalized learning experiences for students, the potential is immense. However, we cannot afford to widen existing gaps. Inclusion, particularly for #women and #youngpeople, must be in the driver's seats of our #collectiveintelligence and impact efforts. We need to take a proactive to #gender intersectional approach within AI efforts to make sure that those most at risk of being left behind are not. If we don't design with #equity in mind, we will never achieve it. We believe that people throughout the world need to be part of the story and no one is left behind. "It's not about you and me. Many thanks for an excellent afternoon at Sync Digital Wellbeing event focused on harnessing the benefits of emerging technology, while mitigating the risk for better health and wellbeing. At the heart of the conversation around AI and its future, we must shift from a reactive mindset to a proactive, measurable equity approach that prioritizes health and wellbeing. As Fred Werner from ITU’s AI for Good reminds us, we can no longer afford the "build it and fix it later" attitude. Despite ambitious goals, there remains a significant gap in implementation. We urgently need more standards, such as AI watermarks to combat deepfakes. It was also highlighted that we need a comprehensive research agenda that includes #gender dimensions. Building on Google #DeepMind's advancements highlight the rapid evolution of AI, from its beginnings as a research project to now providing critical insights into protein structures and accelerating the development of new treatments, especially for neglected diseases. This progress underscores the importance of robust #publicprivatepartnerships, grounded in open, mutual understanding. There was a call to action from Alain Labrique to move toward localization and on-site engagement with computing power, collaboration across sectors coupled with solid architectural foundations. As we connect the unconnected and address potential polarization, it’s vital that the public is better informed and engaged. health.enabled emphasizes proactive, measurable equity approaches to #AI and #digitalhealth and #digitalwellbeing, particularly with active engagement of low and middle-income countries, women, and young people who are most at risk of being left behind. There is also an exciting opportunity with 3.4 billion #gamers worldwide to leverage digital channels for education and health as public goods. Engaging content creators and influencers with accurate health information is key to combating misinformation, a significant public health concern. In this exciting period of AI adaptation, what we do today will shape the future. As we lay the groundwork for ethical AI use, Alain reminded us of Steven Covey's saying that: "Innovation moves at the speed of trust." #AIforGood #DigitalWellbeing #TechForGood #PublicHealth #AIStandards #Collaboration #Innovation
